The Catalans giants are still under massive debts

The crisis scenario involving Barcelona appeared to be getting worse as LaLiga have informed the team that they would have to reduce their payroll budget by £57 million.

The Spanish giants have underperformed in the league this campaign, lying in third place below Girona and eight points adrift league leaders Real Madrid.

However, given that Barcelona’s financial position deteriorated further as a result of a predicted player exodus, that difference might widen over the ensuing years.

La Liga said the Blaugrana were going to be getting their authorised salary maximum slashed from £231m to 174m for the 2024/25 season.

The club is significantly over budget and will need to make severe changes, as their real roster cost (the sum of salaries including transfer amortisations) for this season is officially budgeted at £421 million.

This is far from an ideal situation when you consider that Uefa has rejected Barcelona’s request to use future media sale profits in their FFP calculations. This could yet result in the team being banned from the Champions League.

To comply with the regulations and avoid a transfer ban, Barcelona will have to sell several of their most prized players.

In addition, since club legend Xavi Hernandez revealed he was leaving at the end of the season, there would be more work to do to persuade a new manager to take over.

Prominent figures associated with the way out involve, but aren’t restricted to, Robert Lewandowski, Gavi, Raphinha, Ronald Araujo, Pedri, and Frenkie de Jong, who continues to get an enormous salary.

Two seasons ago, De Jong was subjected to a summer exit to Manchester United, but the move was thwarted by the Dutchman’s lack of move-stomach.

But according to recent sources, the 26-year-old has altered his mind and is now amenable to moving to Old Trafford.

Taking into account the purchase cost they gave Ajax and the balance on his deal, Barca will still have to amortise £65 million when their agreement with him expires in 2026.
