The Cityzens dominated the Premier League in the 21st century

The term ‘hat-trick’ is used to define when a player achieves the feat of scoring three goals in a game, and is one of the most impressive individual feats a player can accomplish during a match. Finding the back of the net doesn’t come easily in football, therefore scoring thrice in a single game is quite an achievement.

The Premier League has been blessed with some truly elite forwards over the years who have scored an abundance of hat tricks. Scoring goals regularly and with consistency across a few seasons in the English top flight is regarded as a feat that only the best strikers in the world can do. As a result, strikers who play for Premier League clubs are often among the best in the world.

Yet, despite the odds, some goalscorers have made scoring a hat trick look like child’s play, achieving the feat over and over again in their careers. Here we take a look at the players who have most Premier League hattricks for Manchester City:

5. Phil Foden – 2

Foden is a rare breed of English footballer who is completely at home at the heart of midfield in a team managed by Guardiola. His exceptional first touch, close control, balance and poise on the ball makes him special. He is ambitious and forward-thinking with both his passing and his dribbling, and equally comfortable in a position between the lines.

He is brilliant at dropping his shoulder and then bursting forward to break lines, often from a standing position after receiving a pass under pressure. When he reaches full speed he is a deceptively powerful runner who can be difficult to stop. He recently scored his second hattrick against Brentford in a 3-1 win for City.

4. Carlos Tevez – 4

Tevez was a quick, tenacious, powerful, hard-working, dynamic and versatile forward, with a sturdy physique. A technical, tactically intelligent, and creative player, with an eye for goal.  Due to his pace, strength, work rate and stamina, Tevez was also extremely useful when possession was lost, and he excelled at pressing opponents, aiding his team to win back the ball and start attacking plays, making him effective both defensively and offensively. Although his stint with City was not long but still was able to score four hattricks for his team.

3. Raheem Sterling – 5

He is known for his pace, low centre of gravity, and dribbling skills. Sterling is so in sync with his teammates that he knows exactly when to spring into life and sprint towards a goal. The combination of his well-timed runs and speed that few defenders can match. He possesses a wonderful balance of power and poise.

His pace is complemented by precision and tactical intelligence, and he has fearlessness and freedom about him which characterises his play. Even though he is not playing for City any more and currently he is plying his trade for the London side Chelsea, he has scored many goals for the Citizens and also has five hattricks into his name.

2. Erling Haaland – 5

Strikers as dominant as Erling Haaland rarely come along. We’ve seen a plethora of wonderful strikers in the beautiful game throughout its glorious existence. Haaland looks destined for a place in the pantheon of all-time greats. The Norwegian star has not failed to live up to the hype and has scored five hat-tricks till now.

He uses his huge stride to sprint past opponents, and he is so fast that he often overtakes players who have had a significant head-start on him. He is constantly on the move and, as a result, he consistently tests his opponents’ concentration and stamina. Any lapse and he is more than capable of taking advantage. The pace at which Haaland moves off the ball causes opponents real problems. He can break Aguero’s record and he is on his way to do it.

1. Sergio Aguero – 12

Sergio Aguero enjoyed an extremely successful career at Manchester City. After arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011, he established himself as one of the best strikers in world football. Overall, Aguero found the back of the net 184 times in 275 league appearances for City. Sergio Aguero currently holds the record for most Premier League hat-tricks scored with 12, surpassing Alan Shearer’s tally of 11.

Agüero’s 12th hat-trick, which gave him the Premier League record, came against Aston Villa in January 2020 and the process saw him overtake Thierry Henry as the highest non-English goalscorer in Premier League history. He is not only a Man City legend but he is also a Premier League legend.
