UEFA report Manchester United 2022-23 squad as most expensive ever in European history

Manchester United have made plenty of expensive signings

At the end of the 2023 fiscal year, Manchester United 2022-23 squad is the most costly squad ever formed in Europe, according to a UEFA report. According to the analysis, which examined data from elite teams throughout Europe, the Red Devils’ players’ total transfer fees came to an astonishing £1.21 billion.

They paid £85.5 million for Antony, £80 million for Harry Maguire, the defender, in 2019, £73 million for Jadon Sancho, the player, two years later, and £60 million for Casemiro in 2022.

With his high price tag, former Ajax winger Antony became probably United’s biggest failure in the past decade, scoring just four goals in 44 league games.

Maguire has returned to Manchester United’s starting lineup, although Sancho is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund following a split with Erik ten Hag, while Casemiro, who turns 32 later this month, has struggled with injuries this season.

The summer transfer window was not included in UEFA’s data collection.

Prior to this season, the Red Devils also made significant expenditures, paying more than £175 million in total to acquire Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, and Andre Onana.

Hojlund has begun to repay the club’s faith in him by scoring five goals in his last five games; however, Mount has been sidelined for the majority of the season due to numerous injury setbacks, and Onana has had a lacklustre debut after making several mistakes during United’s disastrous Champions League campaign.

Even with the most extravagantly constructed team in the world, Manchester United only came in third place in the Premier League last season, trailing champion Manchester City by 14 points.

They have had an even worse season than last since they are currently sixth in the table and might perhaps miss out on playing in the Champions League.
