And Tuchel included a particular directive for stars who might be happy to see him go at the start of his conversation with his teammates last Wednesday following the breaking of the news, an attempt to galvanise such players for the decisive finale of the season.

Thomas Tuchel added in his squad meeting: “There are no longer discussions every week, everyone knows about it.

“We can still achieve something, we have to win.”

Tuchel, nevertheless, did not lose hope as his team still has a lot to work for, even after their shocking DfB Pokal Cup loss to Saarbrucken in November.

Bayern Munich are eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the league, and they are contenders to take the tie since they play Lazio at home in the second leg.

In their hunt for Tuchel’s replacement, Bayern have been strongly connected to Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, who is additionally coveted by Liverpool.
