Only two players have ever scored a hattrick in the English first tier for the Wanderers

Premier League started in the year 1992 and since then has been growing exponentially. The craze with the English top tier is so much that it is effectively the most watched and followed football league in the entire world. Many players from around the globe would love to be welcomed in this league.

The league has been home to many scorers from around the world. But their something that differentiates a hattrick scorer from the usual ones. Most notably Sergio Agüero who played for Manchester City was able to find the back of the net thrice on many occasions. The player had scored 12 Premier League hattricks in his career.

After winning the 2017-18 EFL Championship, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been a part of the English top division regularly. And only in that period, only two players have ever scored a PL hat trick for the Wolves. The following two names have scored the hat trick.

Diogo Jota vs Leicester City (19 Jan 2019)

The player currently plays for Liverpool FC and is coached by none other than Jürgen Klopp. The Reds currently lead the league table with 51 points after 23 games. This season alone Diogo Jota has found the back of the net a total of 8 times in the division.

Before the Anfield giants acquired the services of the Portuguese winger and forward, Jota was performing for the Wanderers. After a fruitful loan spell that helped Wolves win the second division title, the player was moved in permanently from Spanish side Atlético de Madrid.

In the 2018-19 season, which happens to be the Wolves’ time back in the first tier after promotion and Diogo Jota’s permanent transfer, the player ended up registering his name on a milestone. In January, in a home game against Leicester City, Jota scored the first ever PL hat trick ever by a Wolves player. The feat was made even more memorable as he was the only second player to bag a hat trick in England’s first division hailing from Portugal. The first one was scored by a legend named Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although since then Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes have also added their names to the list of Portuguese players to do so, Jota will always be remembered as the one who left a mark in Wolves PL history.

Matheus Cunha vs Chelsea (4 Feb 2024)

After getting promoted and being in the Premier League from the 2018-19 season, a Wolves player hadn’t scored a hat trick once again after the heroics of Diogo Jota. But after five years of that achievement, a certain Brazilian has done it proudly against Chelsea.

We are talking about the brilliance of Matheus Cunha. Cunha not only became the second-ever player for the Molineux Stadium hosts ever to score a hat trick but also the first to do it so away from home. Remember Jota bagged the match ball at home against the Foxes. Cunha on the other did it on the soil of Stamford Bridge. A memorable event both in the player’s career and the club’s cycle in the PL.

The Brazilian centre forward who dons the number 12 on his back when taking the field for the Wolves already has 9 goals and 6 assists. And this is his very first ‘full’ season in the league after a permanent move in the summer. After a six-month short loan spanning from 2023 January to June, Matheus Cunha shifted in permanently. Coincidently, Cunha also moved in from Los Colchoneros, like once Diogo Jota did.

The number 12’s hat trick helped a 4-2 win over the Blues. Also, his side managed to do the double-over Mauricio Pochettino’s men this league season. Cunha also made his way into a list as the only fourth player to score a PL hat-trick at Stamford Bridge against the West London outfit.
