The former Ajax player has been given six-year prison after smuggling cocaine

After attending a training camp with Spartak Moscow, Quincy Promes is allegedly being detained by police in Dubai. This is only a few weeks after he was given a six-year prison sentence for narcotics smuggling.

The former Ajax player was prevented from returning to Russia with his teammates after being halted at the border.

Promes was found guilty in February of smuggling more than 1,350 kilogrammes of cocaine in January 2020, and he was given a six-year prison sentence. The Dutchman was given an 18-month jail term in June of last year for stabbing his cousin.De Telegraaf claims that Promes’ incarceration was previously unknown to the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service.

The Russian government believes that Promes’ detention by Dubai police is related to his criminal conviction, according to the Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

That said, this cannot be verified. Promes was charged in May of last year for his alleged role in the cocaine smuggling, which resulted in two batches of 650 kg and 713 kg of cocaine being discovered in Antwerp in January 2020.

Promes and a 32-year-old co-suspect were formally declared convicted by the Public Prosecution Service of buying, selling, transferring, and having the illegal substances.

The pills were allegedly shipped from Brazil in two containers to Antwerp, where they were concealed in a cargo of sea salt.

The former Ajax winger never spoke about the charges against him because he did not show up for the trial, according to NOS.According to additional sources, the former Netherlands international ignored the court dates, indicating that he feels “untouchable.”Prosecutors reportedly stated: “He seems to think he is untouchable in Russia or abroad,” according to the NL Times.Additionally, it’s said that the goal of the prosecution was to determine “how such a successful footballer allowed himself to be drawn so deeply into crime.”
