Can the Seagulls upset the in-form Roma side?

Roma and Brighton are gearing up for their clash in the first leg of the Round of 16 UEFA Europa League match. Roma, under Daniele de Rossi’s guidance, haven’t lost in their last five games across all competitions, climbing to fifth place in the league standings. They drew both legs against Feyenoord in the Europa League, eventually winning in a penalty shootout with goalkeeper Mile Svilar as the hero.

In contrast, Brighton’s recent form has been shaky. Despite securing a spot in the last 16 of the Europa League, they’ve struggled, managing only two wins in their last six games. Injuries have hit them hard, leading to consecutive defeats, including an exit from the FA Cup and a loss in the Premier League to Fulham.

Kick-off

Thursday: 7th March 2024, 5:45 PM GMT (11:15 PM IST)

Location: Stadio Olimpico

Form

Roma (in all competitions): D-W-W-W-W

Brighton (in all competitions): L-W-D-L-L

Players to watch

Lorenzo Pellegrini (AS Roma)

The 27-year-old Italian attacking midfielder has been firing guns blazing this season. Pellegrini already has nine G/A this season in just 19 games in all competitions. Moreover, his attacking runs have been creating a lot of menace for the opposing defences.

Pascal Gross (Brighton)

One player who goes under the radar for his versatility in football currently is Pascal Gross. Despite the team’s off form recently, the 32-year-old German player has shone. He has scored four goals and has assisted 10 goals more.

Match facts

  • Roma have scored at least one goal for 10 consecutive matches.
  • Brighton have scored 49 goals they have conceded 44 goals in the league. Leaking goals at the back.

Injury & team news

Roma will be without Tammy Abraham, as he continues to recover from an ACL injury, but his return isn’t imminent. Rasmus Kristensen sustained an injury in the recent win over Monza and is likely to be sidelined.

For the away camp, Joao Pedro and James Milner are expected to be out for another week, while Billy Gilmour, who is suspended domestically, is likely to feature. Jack Hinshelwood, Kaoru Mitoma, and Solly March remain long-term absentees.

Head-to-head

This will be their first encounter with each other.

Match prediction for Roma vs Brighton

The match is set for the home side and the Romans to come out as victors. They have been unstoppable recently, and their upcoming English visitors are on a slump in form. We predict a tough loss for Brighton.
