Usain Bolt could be a very good full-back– Vicente del Bosque

The 32-year old debuted for The Yellow and Navy in a friendly victory in August.

Vicente del Bosque is the latest in the line to support Usain Bolt in his bid to secure a professional contract with the Central Coast Mariners. The FIFA World Cup-winning manager stated that the sprint king has excellent potential as a football player, but could be best suited to play as a defender.

The 32-year-old Jamaican is currently aiming to start a new professional career in football after his immense success on the track. He is currently on an "indefinite" trial with the A-League side. Lightning Bolt debuted for the Australian club in a recent friendly against Central Coast Select XI in August 2018. He came off the bench to play on the left wing in a 6-1 victory.

However, the Spaniard has proposed that the 8-time Olympic gold medallist would be successful as a wing-back, as he could use his pace to prosper in that position. According to the Olympic Channel, the former Real Madrid manager said, "With space, he could be a very good footballer. He could be a full-back who covers a lot of space, but it depends, because it's not just about covering 100, or 60 or 70 metres of the pitch. It's about doing it many times over and that requires stamina which I don’t know whether he has or not – although I'm sure he has prepared. Without a doubt as a full-back, with his back towards the crowd and the touchline, that's where he would be most useful."

The 100 metres world-record holder has previously had training stints with Borussia Dortmund, Stromsgodset, and Mamelodi Sundowns. According to Del Bosque, Bolt needs to concentrate more on his technical side, which needs improving.

"To start playing professional football at the age of 32 isn't normal. It's difficult because despite being in peak physical condition, I believe that the technical part is the fundamental part of football. A player's fantastic conditioning – being fast, agile, powerful – should support the technical ability. He will probably learn the tactical side and get to understand the game better both defensively and offensively." said the UEFA Euro 2012 winner.

He further quipped, "I'm sure he will find a solution to all of that, but the most difficult part will be to acquire the technical skills you need for any play. Control, passing, dribbling, a good touch on the ball, skills that you normally have had since childhood."

Del Bosque's support comes after stars like Tim Cahill and Keisuke Honda also got behind Bolt's aim to land a professional contract with the Central Coast Mariners.
