The Islanders won both their friendlies at Abu Dhabi in preparation for the tournament.
Mumbai City FC are all set to compete in their debut AFC Champions League campaign. On April 1, the Islanders have announced a 29-member squad for the competition. They will play their first match on April 8 against Al-Shabab.
The ISL League Winners’ Shield triumph in 2020/21 earned Mumbai City FC a spot in the most reputed club competition in Asia. After FC Goa, they were the second ISL club to achieve this feat. The Islanders didn’t have the best of seasons this time around. They failed to qualify for the playoffs and ended the league in fifth position with 31 points.
Training camp in Abu Dhabi
After the end of their ISL campaign, Des Buckingham’s side made their way to Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi, where they enjoyed a two-week training camp. The Indian players who had to attend national duties and some others including foreigners, joined the camp a few days later.
Mumbai City played two friendly games in Abu Dhabi. On 27th March, they successfully defeated UAE Pro League table-toppers Al Ain by a margin of 2-1. The goals for the Islanders were netted by Ahmed Jahouh and Lalengmawia in the 33rd and 60th minute respectively. Three days later, in another friendly against Al Hilal United, Mumbai City managed to secure a 2-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Bipin Singh and Diego Mauricio. Thus, after a positive training camp, it can be said that the Mumbai-based outfit are all set to give a sharp challenge to their opponents in the AFC Champions League.
