The A-Team are out of the World Cup.

In their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal, Argentina defeated 10-man Switzerland in extra time thanks to goals by Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez.

Argentina defeated Switzerland at Kansas City Stadium in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals with two goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez in extra time.

In the second semi-final on Wednesday at Atlanta Stadium, Lionel Scaloni’s team, which had a numerical advantage for over fifty minutes, will now take on bitter rivals England.

Switzerland had a strong start, but Argentina took the lead early on thanks to an unexpected goal. Despite being surrounded by tall opponents, 1.76-meter Alexis Mac Allister headed it home strongly after Lionel Messi swung in the corner.

A-Team soon regained control. Dan Ndoye levelled the score after Lisandro bravely stopped one shot and Emiliano saved another magnificently.

With the game heading into extra-time, Argentina managed to find the lead when Alvarez curled the ball in, before Martinez ensured Argentina’s place in the semi-final.

Switzerland’s World Cup 2026 campaign came to an agonising end after their defeat. Despite fighting hard until the end, they were unlucky in the match.

It could have been different if they hadn’t been one man down after a red card to Breel Embolo following an A-Team equaliser.

They managed to force the game into extra-time despite going a man down. But their luck ran out. The defending champions managed to find the winner in the 112th minute and scored one more.

Switzerland bowed out of the competition with a great run. They put up a brilliant performance against two South American giants in the knockout stage.
