Argentina gets green light by White House FIFA task force for Falklands banner ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 final

The FIFA World Cup final will be played on July 19.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has been filled with controversy. From Folorin Bolugan’s red card to Argentina’s 3-2 win over Egypt, multiple opinions have been shared about the tournament online and in North America.
Amid all the incidents, defending champions Argentina’s name has been the most trending. They secured a 2-1 comeback win over England in the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez helped Lionel Scaloni’s side reach their second consecutive final for the second time.
However, after the win, as part of their celebration, Argentine players showed up with a Falklands banner, which can again be displayed by the side in the final.
Argentine players can show the Falklands banner again during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final

The White House FIFA task force has given the green light to Argentina to show the Falklands banner in the World Cup final if they win against Spain on Sunday.
La Albiceleste players unveiled a banner about the Falkland Islands after their win over England in the semi-finals earlier this week at the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia. The action sparked controversy as it was stated that a few players might face suspension ahead of the game.
Interestingly, no players have been suspended from the Argentine line-up for the summit clash. It could be because FIFA has decided to avoid making major decisions until the final is played in North America. However, the authority might take action once the tournament ends.
On the contrary, the head of the task force, Andrew Giuliani, has encouraged the three-time champions to display the banner again in the final, especially if they defeat Spain. Giuliani has claimed that everyone is allowed to express their opinion while also stating that the country encourages people to utilise their right to freedom of speech.

Referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have been permitted to officiate games involving England and Argentina under FIFA rules. Officials cannot officiate games involving their own country to avoid potential bias.
Meanwhile, they cannot take charge of the summit clash because of the long history of political tensions between the two sides, with the 1982 Falklands War as the root cause. La Albiceleste players were also seen singing “Muchachos,” a song that references the British overseas territory.
Andrew Giuliani’s opinion contradicts FIFA’s rule, which strictly prohibits any political messaging in its games. However, it remains to be seen what will happen in the final game, as the Argentine players still have the banner.
