Arsenal took on Manchester City in the FA Community Shield 2026 final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, August 16. The Gunners won the English football curtain opener, beating City 3-0.
The Gunners got off to a blistering start in the contest, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring inside the first minute. The Italian left-back was found by a sublime pass from Myles Lewis-Skelly and made no mistake in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal.
Kai Havertz doubled the lead in the 28th minute. A ball from Martin Odegaard was headed back centrally by Christos Tzolis, and Havertz headed it in from close range. Tzolis then created another goal soon after the start of the second half, setting up Odegaard, who scored in the 48th minute. This sealed a comprehensive win for the Gunners in the Community Shield final.

Important things we learned from Arsenal vs Manchester City:
1. Lewis-Skelly’s bit of magic
Calafiori found the back of the net inside 25 seconds, marking the fastest recorded goal in Community Shield history. However, the bulk of the credit must go to Lewis-Skelly, whose final ball was one for the highlight reels.
After gaining possession inside the City third, the youngster looked set to play it wide to the wings, but instead cut a delightful through ball, finding Calafiori. This took both Abduokodir Khusanov and Donnarumma by surprise, allowing the defender to score.
Lewis-Skelly has been strongly linked with an exit from the Emirates Stadium, with Manchester United a possible destination. However, if tonight’s performance is any indication of things to come, Mikel Arteta would want to hold on to his midfield prodigy.
2. Foden fails to grab opportunity
Phil Foden would have been pleased with a change in leadership after seeing his role diminish gradually under Pep Guardiola. Following a disastrous season, the 26-year-old started today’s match, but completely failed to stake any claim for a starting spot in the Premier League.
He was completely anonymous in the opening stages of the game, having fewer than a dozen touches in the opening 15 minutes. He also received the first booking of the match, needlessly pulling down Christos Tzolis. It would be very surprising if Rayan Cherki does not replace him in the league opener.
3. Nightmare performance from Donnarumma
On his day, Donnarumma is one of the finest goalkeepers in the world. Unfortunately for Manchester City, today was not that day. The Italian was partly at fault for the opening goal, as Lewis-Skelly’s pass caught him by surprise. He made an early dash for the ball, allowing Calafiori to find the back of the net.
The second goal, on the other hand, was an atrocious piece of goalkeeping. Havertz’s header was fairly central, but somehow crept under Donnarumma’s elbow before hitting his body and crossing the line. The goalkeeper also dove way too quickly for Arsenal’s third goal.
With James Trafford having left for Leeds United permanently, Maresca is stuck with Donnarumma, for better or for worse.
4. Tzolis’ dream debut
There were a few eyebrows raised when Arteta decided to let Leandro Trossard depart for Besiktas, putting all his faith in summer signing Christos Tzolis. However, the Greek winger has silenced all critics with his performance today, setting up two goals.
The first one was an instinctive header towards Havertz, which the latter turned in past Donnarumma. The second one was much more pleasing to the eye, with the 24-year-old left winger finding Odegaard with a quick through ball that the latter fired into the back of the net.
Gunners fans are suddenly not feeling as bad about missing out on Vinicius Junior.
5. Arteta neutralises Maresca-ball
There is no shame in losing to this Arsenal side, but Enzo Maresca’s competitive debut for City could not have gone worse. More than the scoreline, the Italian tactician would be disappointed by being completely outplayed tactically by Arteta.
Despite City having three defenders when in possession, Arteta’s attackers easily cut through their defensive lines time and again. In hindsight, the decision to play Khusanov on the right was also a poor one, with the Uzbek youngster struggling to contain Calafiori and Tzolis. He failed to get closer to his man in the second half, leading to the third goal.
Arteta, on the other hand, fixed the two issues plaguing him. After failing to keep a clean sheet in their last six games, Arteta’s Gunners side shut out the City attackers today. The Spaniard also ended his two-match losing streak against the Cityzens.
