City came out empty-handed from Villa Park.

Aston Villa hosted Manchester City at Villa Park for a Matchday 8 fixture of the Premier League 2026-27 on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Two goals from Nicolas Jackson secured a 2-1 win for the hosts.

After a bright start to the match, Aston Villa took the lead in just the sixth minute when John McGinn capitalised on a defensive error to tee up Nicolas Jackson, who beat Gianluigi Donnarumma to find the back of the net.

Manchester City continued to push hard for an equaliser but failed to get a breakthrough in the first half. The equaliser came just seven minutes after the restart, with Erling Haaland heading past Zion Suzuki.

Jackson put the hosts ahead, scoring in the 60th minute after a sumptuous cross from substitute Ibrahim Mbaye. That goal proved to be the winner for Unai Emery’s side at their home stadium.

Five things we learned from the Aston Villa vs Manchester City match:

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

1. Guehi struggles again

Marc Guehi had a disappointing outing in the 3-2 win against Ipswich Town, conceding a poor penalty. Against Villa, the England international was deployed on the right of Ruben Dias instead of his favoured left, and the discomfort was clear to see in his game.

He needlessly gave away possession at the back to John McGinn, resulting in Nicolas Jackson’s opening goal. He continued to struggle throughout, bringing down Jackson in a dangerous area to earn a booking.

If it is any consolation for Guehi, his goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, also had a terrible outing today, conceding from a relatively central shot from Nicolas Jackson.

2. Jackson repays Emery’s faith

When Villa forked out £47.5 million for Nicolas Jackson, a few eyebrows were raised. The Senegalese striker had a torrid time with both Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Yet, Emery saw potential in him. So far, it is fair to say that the move has been a success.

Jackson opened Villa’s account with a smart poacher’s finish. He then gave his side the lead once again at the hour mark, converting Ibrahim Mbaye’s cross.

This marked his seventh goal for Villa across all competitions, making him the club’s top scorer this season. His movement in and around the box has allowed others like McGinn and Johan Manzambi to shine as well.

3. No luck for Ndiaye

Since his high-profile move from Everton, Iliman Ndiaye has yet to open his account for Man City. The Senegal international came close several times in today’s match and frankly should have had multiple goals to his name.

His 20-yard effort was brilliantly denied by an athletic Zion Suzuki. The winger continued to trouble the Villa defence and struck the outside of the post with a low shot. Once again, he failed to find the back of the net, despite an all-around good performance.

However, he did get an assist for Erling Haaland’s equaliser with a wonderful cross.

4. Cherki-Fernandez combination not working

Enzo Maresca’s decision to play Rayan Cherki and Enzo Fernandez together during the UEFA Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain resulted in the Cityzens losing 4-2. A lot of the blame fell on the midfield duo, who lacked any kind of synergy or balance.

The same was evident in today’s match as well. Fernandez is brilliant at covering ground, pushing up at any opportunity he gets. Cherki, meanwhile, rarely tracks back to help his teammates, placing a greater burden on Elliot Anderson.

Time to give Ayyoub Bouaddi a run in the starting lineup, maybe?

5. Haaland gets his goal, again

Before his goal in the 52nd minute, Erling Haaland barely had any impact in the match, cutting a forlorn figure at the top. However, not for the first time, he popped up when his team needed him the most.

A free-kick on the edge of the box was played short to Ndiaye on the right. The Senegalese winger delivered a cross that Haaland headed brilliantly towards goal. It gave Suzuki no chance, nestling into the bottom corner.

This was Haaland’s ninth league goal of the season, keeping him at the top of the Premier League Golden Boot race.
