Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund to be broadcast live in virtual toy world

Fans can watch the Bundesliga derby in the virtual world.

In a milestone moment for the German Bundesliga, the league match between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on October 31, 2026, will be televised live in a virtual toy world designed as Playmobil figurines.

This historic broadcast is a global first for a full-length professional football league match. The state-of-the-art display is made with 3D “skeletal data” taken from 21 distinct data points on the players’ bodies (the head, joints and limbs).

Those coordinates are mapped out, and then actual Bayern and Dortmund players and ball motions are overlaid over the digital Playmobil character representations in real time.

How virtual toy world broadcast works

This unique display is generated using live skeletal monitoring data. Since the 2025/26 season, the Bundesliga has mapped 21 unique 3D data points on every player’s body, including joints, head, shoulders and feet.

This data is mostly utilised for semi-automated offside technology, but broadcasters are simply overlaying a Playmobil ‘body shell’ over the players’ digital skeletons. This means the toy figures may be exactly in line with the real-life speeds, positions and movements of the players on the pitch.

“Like the actual real game, the Playmobil world game will also be shown on Sky Sport and RTL+, under the title “Sky Sport Special – Next Level”.

It will be a different experience for the Bayern Munich and Dortmund fans who will have a chance to watch the game in a virtual toy world. It will be one of the biggest games of the Bundesliga 2026-27 season for both sides, who are equal on points.

However, Dortmund are second in the table due to goal difference, but a win will see them clinch the top spot. But a lot can change as the fixture is at the end of October, and hopefully both sides will be keen to maintain their winning form until then.
