The Red Devils will face a tough test in tonight’s match against the home team.

Belgium take on the USA in a feisty Round of 16 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, on July 6. The Red Devils booked their place in the last-eight with a dramatic win over Senegal in the last match, and will have their work cut out against an in-form USA side tonight.

The European side began their campaign with back-to-back draws against Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0), but still managed to top Group G with a 5-1 thrashing of New Zealand on the final matchday.

They faced AFCON 2025 finalists Senegal in the Round of 32 and quickly trailed 2-0 after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr. However, late goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans sparked a comeback, and the latter scored the winning penalty deep into extra-time stoppage time to seal the win.

Rudi Garcia’s men will need to muster something similar if they want to beat the Stars and Stripes. The co-hosts have been in good form in the expanded 48-team edition in North America, and will be backed by a vociferous home crowd in Seattle.

Belgium (4-2-3-1): Thibaut Courtois; Timothy Castagne, Brandon Mechele, Nathan Ngoy, Maxim De Cuyper; Youri Tielemans (c), Amadou Onana; Dodi Lukebakio, Nicolas Raskin, Leandro Trossard; Charles De Ketelaere.

Substitutes: Mike Penders (gk), Senne Lammens (gk), Arthur Theate, Joaquin Seys, Koni De Winter, Thomas Meunier, Zeno Debast, Alexis Saelemaekers, Axel Witsel, Diego Moreira, Hans Vanaken, Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Romelu Lukaku.

Thoughts on the lineup

Thibaut Courtois is a star for club and country and is an automatic starter between the sticks. Zeno Debast has missed the entire tournament with a leg injury, and the 22-year-old centre-back is absent from the starting lineup. In his place, Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy start at the heart of defence, joined by Timothy Castagne and Maxim De Cuyper as full-backs.

Last match’s hero Youri Tielemans is joined in midfield by Amadou Onana, who did not start the last three matches. Kevin De Bruyne, who has a solitary goal to his name, is surprisingly dropped to the bench, with Nicolas Raskin coming in his place.

Leandro Trossard, heavily linked with a move to Besiktas, starts on the left flank. Dodi Lukebakio starts on the left, replacing Jeremy Doku. Despite failing to open his account in the tournament, Charles De Ketelaere starts as the team’s lone striker.
