Kosuke Yamakazi scored a brace for the victors.

Delhi FC emerged victors in their first match of the Bordoloi Cup against Assam Police Blues with a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The 68th edition of the Bordoloi Cup, named after Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath, got underway on March 24, 2022. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, the two legacy Indian clubs, have been long-time participants in the prestigious tournament. Mohun Bagan have won the Bordoloi Cup a record seven times.

This year, the tournament boasts a strong lineup of teams yet again, with the likes of ISL regulars NorthEast United, former I league team Shillong Lajong, and Durand Cup side Assam Rifles among the participants.

Delhi FC, the sunrise club of Indian football, are one of the favorites to win the tournament. They looked in great nick in their first match against Assam Police as they were on the front foot right from the word go.

Kosuke Yamazaki, Delhi FC's Japanese superstar, opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a stunning goal from the halfway line. The goalkick didn't reach its target and fell kindly for Yamazaki, who saw the goalkeeper off his line and let rip from 40 yards.

Then, in the 33rd minute, Delhi FC got another good move going and infiltrated the opposition penalty area, where a blatant foul led to a penalty for Delhi FC.

Yamazaki stepped up for it and slotted the ball into the net with ease.

Delhi FC went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The second half as well played out quite similar to the first in terms of Delhi FC dominating the game, but there were no more goals, and the Group B fixture ended with Delhi FC coming away with all three points.

Delhi FC now play their next game against Assam Rifles on March 29.
