Several lesser-known youngsters have made a name for themselves in the ongoing World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has been one of a kind, featuring 1,248 players representing 48 nations in a football extravaganza in North America. Some of the strongest teams have remained in the competition as it enters the Round of 16 phase, while some smaller ones continue their fight after slaying giants along the way.
The established figureheads of the game, like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Cristiano Ronaldo, have impressed for their respective nations. The wunderkinds have lived up to the billing as well, with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi shouldering their responsibilities well.
Some lesser-known young starlets, too, have earned their stripes in the expanded edition of the quadrennial tournament. While not being labelled as world-beaters, they have quietly carved their place among the top players, and are looking at a bright future. Let’s look at a list of five such players.
Five lesser-known youngsters who have impressed in FIFA World Cup 2026
Nestory Irankunda (Australia)

Unless you were a Watford fan, chances are you knew nothing about Nestory Irankunda going into the tournament. However, the 20-year-old has become a national hero for his adopted homeland after becoming the youngest Australian to score in a World Cup, netting in a 2-0 win over Turkiye.
Born in a refugee camp in Tanzania, Irankunda spent two years on the books of Bayern Munich without ever making an appearance. He made a tough choice to leave the German giants and join Watford for three million euros, and finished last season with 42 appearances across all competitions for the Hornets.

Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal)
A product of the Paris Saint-Germain academy, Ibrahim Mbaye enjoyed a breakthrough season with the French champions last season, making 24 Ligue 1 appearances and four cameos in the UEFA Champions League. As a result, he was picked for the Senegal squad for the World Cup.
Mbaye made an immediate impact, scoring against the country of his birth – France – despite playing for just 15 minutes. He has played in all four matches for the Lions of Teranga and was key to their run to the Round of 32.
Johan Manzambi (Switzerland)

Rarely has a young player taken the World Cup by such storm that what Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi managed in this edition. A product of the Freiburg youth system, he enjoyed a superb campaign last season with the German side, making 16 goal contributions in 47 appearances across all competitions.
He carried that form into the World Cup, scoring twice in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Swiss star then got a goal and an assist against Canada, before clinching another assist in a win over Algeria to send the Schweizer-Nati into the Round of 16.
Gilberto Mora (Mexico)
Possibly the most well-known name on this list, Gilberto Mora became the youngest debutant for El Tri in January. The now-17-year-old has proved that he is more than just a hyped-up prospect. He became his side’s youngest player to play in the World Cup after coming on as a substitute against South Africa.
Since then, he has started the matches against Czechia and Ecuador, starring in the latter as the co-hosts sealed a 2-0 win to send themselves to the Round of 16.
Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

The second French-born player on this list, which goes to show the effectiveness of Les Bleus’ youth teams. The Lille youngster had a solid campaign in Ligue 1, starting 28 games and providing an assist. He switched his international allegiance to Morocco to play in the World Cup and has had a phenomenal campaign so far.
He dominated the midfield in the 1-1 draw with Brazil, becoming the second-youngest player to record 50-plus passes in a World Cup match. He produced a similar performance against Scotland, becoming the first 18-year-old to complete more than 50 passes in two World Cup matches. He also shone against the Netherlands and Canada, and looks to be one of the biggest prospects in African football.
Honourable mentions
Some other youngsters have also impressed in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. One of them is Rayan, who was thrust into the Brazilian starting lineup after an injury to Raphinha. The Bournemouth youngster started the last three games for the Selecao, even registering an assist against Scotland.
Kerim Alajbegovic has been brilliant on the left flank for Bosnia and Herzegovina, making four appearances, three of them from the start. He scored a goal against Qatar, marking his first in the tournament.
23-year-old Sidny Lopes Cabral is not technically a youngster, but the Trabzonspor full-back scored one of the finest goals seen in the FIFA World Cup. The goal levelled the score in a tense Round of 32 clash against Argentina in one of the best matches in this year’s edition.
