Spurs were thrashed by a superb Bees side.
Brentford took on Tottenham Hotspur in an exciting Matchday 1 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 season at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The Bees secured a solid 3-0 victory in today’s match.
The hosts began the match on the front foot against a disjointed Spurs side. After an early chance for Nathan Collins, it was Keane Lewis-Potter who put the Bees ahead in the 12th minute, finishing a fine team move started by Mamadou Sangare.
Vitaly Janelt doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, finishing from close range after a mishandled save by Antonin Kinsky. The hosts added a third goal soon after the restart, with Michael Kayode scoring after a corner. Igor Thiago had the chance to score from the spot, but the Brazilian’s penalty struck the inside of the bar.
Despite this, the Bees held on to secure a 3-0 win, securing a memorable start to their league campaign. Meanwhile, it was an embarrassment on the road for Roberto De Zerbi’s expensively assembled Spurs squad.
Important things we learned from Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. Sangare looks class apart
Before the season began, there were talks that Mamadou Sangare could be one of the signings of the season. The Malian midfielder was a target for Liverpool but surprised everyone by choosing to move to the Gtech Community Stadium. Sangare had a debut to remember, setting up Lewis-Potter’s opener with a brilliant one-two.
2. Spurs still not a cohesive unit
Keith Andrews’ Bees are the epitome of 11 players playing in perfect sync, and it was on full display in today’s fixture. On the other hand, Tottenham very much looked like 11 players who were playing together in a competitive fixture for the very first time. Almost half of their starting XI were new signings, who looked to be on a different wavelength from their teammates.

3. Goalkeeping howlers follow Spurs
Antonin Kinsky made headlines after two humiliating errors that led to goals against Atletico Madrid last season. The Czech custodian was under the spotlight once again after being directly responsible for the Bees’ second goal.
Mathias Jensen’s initial shot was a tame one, but Kinsky somehow parried it straight into the path of danger, allowing Janelt to poke the rebound into an empty net. Despite spending hundreds of millions in the summer, Spurs clearly haven’t improved in their weakest position – between the sticks.
4. Set-piece an arsenal for the Bees
Having a former set-piece coach as your manager inevitably means that set-pieces will be a big part of your attacking play, and this is very much the case for Brentford. The Bees constantly troubled the Spurs box with crosses, and a pinpoint delivery from a cross was headed back to Sangare. The midfielder’s shot was saved by Kinsky, but the rebound was sent to the back of the net by Kayode.
5. Could have been much worse for Spurs
As bad as a 3-0 loss is, it could have been so, so much worse for Tottenham. Just before Kayode’s goal, Nathan Collins was hauled down by Marco Senesi in the box, but VAR did not intervene, although replays showed that the Bees had a legitimate claim for a penalty. Then, later in the contest, Thiago hit his spot kick against the bar, giving Kinsky a respite.
