South Africa 0-1 Canada: Five key takeaways from FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash

Can hosts Canada continue their dream run in FIFA World Cup 2026 with win over AFCON champions Morocco?

Houston Stadium in the United States of America is all set to host the Round of 16 fixtures in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where hosts Canada and reigning African champions Morocco are set to lock horns with each other.

Morocco are in sublime form, coming after finishing second in Group C with seven points. They held five-time champions Brazil to a 1-1 draw before registering wins over Haiti and Scotland. In the last game, Morocco went on to eliminate three-time finalists the Netherlands in the Round of 16 fixtures.

Talking about Canada, this is their best-ever World Cup campaign so far. They finished second in their group behind Switzerland and went on to register their first-ever World Cup win over reigning Asian champions Qatar after Jonathan David scored a hat trick to win it 6-0 for the Maple Leaves.

In this article, we find out the confirmed lineup of Canada ahead of the big game against Morocco.

Let’s look at the Canada lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Morocco:

Canada XI (4-4-2): Maxime Crépeau (GK); Alistair Johnston, Luc de Fougerolles, Moïse Bombito, Richie Laryea; Tajon Buchanan, Niko Sigur, Stephen Eustáquio, Ali Ahmed; Jonathan David, Tani Oluwaseyi

Substitutes: Dayne St. Clair, Owen Goodman, Derek Cornelius, Niko Sigur, Joel Waterman, Alfie Jones, Ismaël Koné, Mathieu Choinière, Jacob Shaffelburg, Marcelo Flores, Jonathan Osorio, Cyle Larin, Promise David, Nathan Saliba

Thoughts on the lineup

Jesse Marsch has fielded a strong lineup. His presence in the dugout gives a major boost to Canada. He has formerly coached top European teams like Leeds United and RB Leipzig and knows how to handle pressure in big games like these.

Orlando City goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau will be between the sticks. It has been difficult to beat him. The defence boasts centre-backs Luc de Fougerolles and Bombito from Nice. Toronto’s Laryea and Celtic’s Johnston will be the full-backs.

Their defence has fared well, conceding just three goals across four games and keeping two clean sheets. The midfield has some European flair with Buchanan of Villarreal and Millar of Hull City.

Their offence looks deadly. Jonathan David of Juventus is their top goal scorer. He even scored a hat trick and will be keen to score more against Morocco. Ismael Kone remains absent and it will be interesting to see Larin coming from the bench.

The midfield looks very solid on paper. Niko Sigur and Stephen Eustáquio are going to play an important role.

Where will the Round of 16 FIFA World Cup 2026 clash between Canada & Morocco be played?

The match will take place at Houston Stadium in the United States of America
