The Atlas Lions are now quarterfinal-bound.

For their round of 16 meeting, the Canada national football team locked horns with the Morocco national football team. The Houston Stadium witnessed this 2026 FIFA World Cup clash.

The Jesse Marsch-led side are now officially knocked out of the mega competition this year. They did come up with a different approach to this game, but it was not quite enough against the African champions.

After reaching the semifinals last time, the Morocco national football team are once again secured a spot in the final eight of the FIFA World Cup 2026. They were not looking very organised in the first half, but worked on their mistakes and came up with a strong performance in the second to win the tie by 3-0.

Important things we learned from this match:

1. Morocco march on

The Atlas Lions will now be happy with their result here. They have become the first team to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Moroccan defence was surely on edge in the first half, but a better strategic approach in the second 45 minutes led them to an easy win over one of the co-hosts, Canada.

2. Azzedine Ounahi shines

Azzedine Ounahi came up with a top-of-the-line performance for the Morocco national football team. He scored a brace in the second half and helped his side secure a spot in the last eight of the mega competition this year. The Atlas Lions were desperate for goals, but Ounahi did not back down and delivered when it mattered.

3. Historic Canadian run comes to an end

Led by Jesse Marsch, the Canada men’s national soccer team secured a knockout stage spot at the FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history. They took down South Africa in the round of 32 and showed a tough fight against the Atlas Lions in the round of 16. But their performance was not quite enough and they are now out of the competition.

The Atlas Lions did not allow the Canadian attack to get past. Their defence was on edge, but they did not make any mistakes out there.

5. Huge test in the quarterfinals?

The Mohamed Ouahbi-led side have now secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. They came up with a commendable performance against Les Rouges and will now prepare for their battle in the final eight. Morocco can face either France or Paraguay in the quarter-finals. Any of these opponents will bring a big challenge for them.
