The Blues sealed a nervy victory at home.
Chelsea hosted Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge for a Matchday 2 fixture of the English Premier League 2026-27 season on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Goals from Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro, and Cole Palmer sealed a 4-3 win for the hosts.
The Blues took an early lead inside four minutes. A corner from the right was headed goalwards by Joao Pedro, but was blocked on the line by a defender. Romeo Lavia poked in the rebound, putting the hosts ahead early in the contest.
Pedro Neto then doubled the lead in the 14th minute with a brilliant counter-attack move. Morgan Rogers did well to hold off his marker before playing a low cutback into the middle of the box. Neto came in rushing before finding the bottom corner with his strike.
The Blues scored a third goal in the 32nd minute after another blistering counter-attack. Jorrel Hato made a darting run before picking out Joao Pedro. The Brazilian forward beat Varbruggen to score against his former club.
Brighton got a sliver of hope when Malick Yalcouye pulled one back in the 35th minute, with his volley going off the post. The visitors cut down the deficit further after Pascal Groß’s strike was deflected past Martinez by Joao Pedro. Pedro was credited with the own goal.
Cole Palmer scored a wonderful goal in the 74th minute, sealing the win for the hosts. Pascal Groß scored a header in the 96th minute, but it proved little more than a consolation goal. The result continued Chelsea’s flawless start to their league campaign, while condemning Brighton to their first loss of the season.

Important things we learned from Chelsea vs Brighton:
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. Lavia’s first goal
Recurring injuries and a lack of consistent game time have prevented Romeo Lavia from making a consistent start to his Chelsea career since his £53 million move from Southampton. However, the Belgian midfielder could not have asked for a better way to score his first-ever goal for the Blues.
Joao Pedro’s header was blocked by Mats Wieffer. A mix-up between the defender and goalkeeper Bart Vergbruggen led to the rebound falling kindly for Lavia. The latter gratefully poked it into the back of the net, putting his side ahead.
2. Poor defending hurts Seagulls
Brighton went two goals down inside the opening quarter. Both goals were caused by defensive lapses. Lavia’s opener came after a horrible mix-up between Wieffer and Verbruggen.
The second goal was caused by Ferdi Kadioglu being drawn away by Rogers, with Luka Vuskovic not clocking Neto’s late entry into the box. Brighton were actually playing quite well. But two defensive mistakes cost them the game.
3. Joao Pedro’s mixed outing against former club
Joao Pedro got a hostile reception from the Brighton fans, who booed him every time the Brazilian touched the ball. However, that failed to hinder the Chelsea striker’s performance, whose header led to the opening goal by Lavia.
The No. 9 then scored a brilliant goal after the half-hour mark. He made it a point to celebrate in front of the visiting supporters.
However, Pedro had the misfortune of scoring an own goal after the hour mark, with his unwitting touch sending the ball past Martinez. The striker made amends by setting up Palmer’s late goal.
4. Search for a clean sheet continues
Chelsea’s defensive woes were well documented coming into the new season. The Blues acted quickly to acquire Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa to replace Robert Sanchez between the sticks.
However, even the Argentine goalkeeper could not prevent his side from conceding. Yalcouye’s goal had a touch of fortune to it, but Joao Pedro’s own goal was extremely unlucky for the hosts. Chelsea have now gone a staggering 18 Premier League games without a clean sheet.
5. Palmer continues hot streak

Chelsea should really have killed the game in the first half, with Pedro and Rogers having solid chances to score. However, the hosts failed to capitalise on those chances, which allowed Brighton to pull one back before half-time. Pedro’s own goal made things interesting in the second half.
However, Palmer continued his hot streak this season, making a darting run past a host of defenders before firing a rocket shot with his left foot into the far corner. That goal sealed the win for the Blues, rescuing them from a tough situation.
