Chelsea FC had a hard-fought battle against the fellow English Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur. These clubs squared off against each other at the Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia.

Led by Xabi Alonso, Chelsea FC fell to defeat against the Spurs in the club-friendly outing ahead of the new season. There was nothing to separate these clubs until the Lilywhites came up with a match-winner in the final moments of the game.

Both of these English top-division sides got to learn where they need to improve heading into the 2026-27 campaign. Neither of these sides is going to compete in the UEFA Champions League in the upcoming season, but will be battling it out for the domestic titles.

1. Spurs continue their unbeaten pre-season run

Tottenham Hotspur have now emerged victorious in their second straight pre-season match. They took down Chelsea after Richarlison came in with an important match-winning goal in the final moments of the game.

Spurs were also reduced to 10-men after Kevin Danso was shown a red card in the 49th minute. Despite that, they maintained their calm and composure on the field.

2. Defensive problems prove costly for Chelsea

The Blues were unable to hold a 10-man Spurs and faced a 1-2 defeat in the end. Xabi Alonso’s men might have looked confident in the midfield, but their performance in the backline was quite poor.

Even though names like Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill were the main centre-backs, the Blues conceded an early goal. Chelsea continue to allow their opponents to take more and more chances, which builds up pressure.

The £100 million man has finally been unleashed. Sandro Tonali stepped up and came up with a sensational strike from outside the box to break the deadlock early in the game. He played an important role in controlling the game for Tottenham Hotspur as well. Will Tonali be able to drop these performances consistently?

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur battled hard, but it was Roberto De Zerbi’s men who came out on top with a 2-1 win. The Blues will have to work on their defence as they made many errors and looked vulnerable. The Spurs, on the other hand, got multiple chances to extend their lead, but they lack quality in the attacking front. Both of these Premier League clubs still have time to improve.
