Mateta’s future at the Eagles has come under scrutiny.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is suing Crystal Palace over the last year of his contract, but so far, the striker has failed to get it declared invalid by an independent Premier League panel and FIFA.

The French international signed a four-and-a-half-year contract after joining permanently from Mainz in January 2022, following an initial loan, with the possibility of a 12-month extension. That was put into effect by Palace in 2024, with Mateta’s contract scheduled to expire at the end of the campaign.

However, it is thought that the 29-year-old and his representatives contested the validity of the extension and filed a petition with an independent tribunal under Premier League regulations last season. An official announcement of the outcome has yet to be made, but Palace claim Mateta’s contract is still valid, and he participated in their defeat against Everton on Saturday.

However, if Mateta leaves Palace this summer, here are the five clubs he could join before the transfer window closes.

5. Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid could be an ideal choice for Jean-Philippe Mateta if a formal deal is made before the summer transfer deadline. The 29-year-old French international striker is now in an aggressive standoff with Crystal Palace after unsuccessfully attempting to annul the last ten months of his contract through an independent Premier League tribunal and a FIFA hearing to compel a transfer.

4. Tottenham Hotspur

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s advisors are working hard to secure him a new club, and Tottenham Hotspur have been approached about a prospective transfer. Tottenham are on the verge of signing Savinho and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, but they remain keen to add another attacker to their offensive lineup.

3. Manchester United

Palace might believe selling to Manchester United would fetch them a big sum, although the Red Devils’ interest has been subdued. Mateta is viewed as a strong, rotation-friendly attacker who may supplement the team’s current lineup.

From a football standpoint, United provides a platform to possibly compete in the Champions League while playing in the Premier League. At the moment, the deal appears more theoretical than proactive, but if other targets fail, Old Trafford might emerge as a surprise candidate.

2. Nottingham Forest

Jean-Philippe Mateta might want to consider joining Nottingham Forest since it offers a good chance of regular Premier League minutes and an ideal scenario, yet opinions on the move’s ambition vary. Forest have actively targeted forward depth, with a past bid of £35 million for Crystal Palace’s striker.

1. Aston Villa

Unai Emery has been looking for another No. 9 to replace Ollie Watkins and provide tactical flexibility, and Aston Villa have emerged as the most serious domestic candidate. According to reports, Villa are willing to acquire Jean-Philippe Mateta outright.

Mateta checks numerous boxes for the Villans, including Premier League experience, European football, and a player known for offensive threat. The only probable roadblocks are price and time. The urgency will decrease, but if not, Mateta may become their top priority January transfer.

Will Jean-Philippe Mateta leave Crystal Palace?

It seems so at the moment. Mateta is suing Crystal Palace over the last year of his contract, contesting the validity of a 12‑month extension activated in 2024. Palace maintain the deal is valid, and he even featured in their recent defeat to Everton.

Which club will Jean-Philippe Mateta join if he leaves Palace?

Five clubs are linked with him this summer, including three from the Premier League. The key hurdles to a transfer are price and timing.
