Argentina are taking on Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19. La Albiceleste had a tough opening hour in the match, failing to get any shots away.
The defending champions suffered an early injury blow as well. Lisandro Martinez was forced off with an injury in the first half. Martinez’s defensive partner, Cristian Romero, also saw his outing come to an end in the second half after being substituted due to an injury.
It was not immediately clear what Romero’s injury was. The Tottenham Hotspur defender went down moments after Ferran Torres saw his header saved by Emiliano Martinez. He was in some discomfort and had a conversation with his teammates.
Once the second hydration break was over, he was replaced by Marseille defender Facundo Medina.

Argentina’s toothless performance

Martinez’s withdrawal would have been a big blow for Lionel Scaloni’s side, with the centre-back scoring the vital goal in the 3-2 win over Egypt. Despite being the reigning world champions, they did not have any shots. Just a solitary touch in the opposition’s box for three-fourths of regulation time.
Scaloni opted for wholesale changes in the second half, bringing on attacking reinforcements in the form of Lautaro Martinez. However, this still did not allow them to test Unai Simon in goal.
Spain, meanwhile, had seven shots on target but failed to beat Emiliano Martinez.
