Cristiano Ronaldo shared a sweet message for his rival.

After 208 appearances and 126 goals, Lionel Messi brought down the curtain on his Argentina career in a friendly against Benin on October 6, 2026. The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward scored a goal and registered two assists in his final international appearance.

He retired as Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer. He also led his nation to the FIFA World Cup 2022 title. He also took his nation to the World Cup final in 2026, losing 1-0 to Spain in the showpiece fixture.

However, following the death of his father, Jorge, Messi shared an emotional message announcing his international retirement. The friendly against Benin was arranged as his farewell match.

The rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi has been one of the defining features of world football for the last two decades. However, the Portuguese veteran took to social media to post a heartfelt message for Messi.

Commenting on an Instagram post made by Messi recounting his final international appearance, Ronaldo conveyed respect for the former Barcelona forward.

“Leo, so many years defending your country and a history that will last forever,” Ronaldo wrote. “All my respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. A hug.”

While Messi has ended his international career on a high note, Ronaldo’s international future remains clouded in uncertainty. The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward was involved in a tussle with Portugal national team head coach Jorge Jesus, leading to the player leaving the national team camp.

Whether Ronaldo plays another match in a Portugal shirt remains to be seen, with neither the player nor the head coach looking likely to reach a compromise.
