Sports18 revealed as official broadcasters of Durand Cup 2022
The competition is set to begin from August 16 across three venues.
The Durand Cup committee has roped in Sports18 as their official broadcasters of the tournament. Yes, there were rumours around the vertical that the recently launched channel might take up the prestigious tournament under their belt. Now, finally it has come in a formal way.
The Durand Cup 2022 is all set to start on the 16th of August. For the first time, all 11 Indian Super League teams will be participating in the tournament. Although the Durand Cup authorities wanted the ISL sides to field their main team, many clubs will be using their reserve team to ply the trade. The tournament will also feature five I-League sides and four armed forces’ team.
Change in fixtures and updates on the teams
Previously, it was decided that the Kolkata Derby will commence the Indian football calendar this time. However, with time, the decision has been changed. The first game of the Durand Cup will be played between last season’s champions and runners-up – FC Goa and Mohammedan SC, respectively. The Kolkata Derby has been shifted to the 28th of August. Even the tickets for the big game had been out. The small percentage kept for sale was sold out in a span of half an hour.
Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC were the first team to reach Kolkata. The Marina Machans have also played a few friendlies prior to the Durand Cup. This shows how enthusiastic they are to start the season with a bang. Meanwhile Kolkata giant East Bengal is yet to put a stop to their team building. A few days back they signed 13 players. A few of them are Jerry Lalrinzuala, Aniket Jadhav and Souvik Chakrabarti.
Other Indian Super League sides like Mumbai City and Odisha FC are also fully focused on the historic event. Meanwhile, due to certain reasons Gokulam Kerala had withdrawn their name from the competition. Sudeva Delhi have been added as their replacement and the team will reach the venue on 17th August.
