Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had to be stretchered off after a scary on-field collision with Jarrad Branthwaite during his side’s Premier League 2026-27 Matchday 7 fixture against Everton on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
After a goalless first half, the Blues took the lead soon after the restart through Pedro Neto. However, that joy turned to concern in the 75th minute, when Martinez was seriously injured after a free-kick situation.
The incident happened when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a left-footed, inswinging ball into the Chelsea penalty area. Martinez came off his line to punch the ball away. However, the Argentine seemed to collide head-on with Everton defender Branthwaite, who was attempting to head the ball goalwards.

Both players went down in pain after the collision, and medical staff immediately rushed on to the pitch to treat them. Branthwaite was cleared to continue by the staff; however, Martinez’s situation looked more serious.
The former Aston Villa goalkeeper appeared to display the fencing response, which is an involuntary movement in which an arm moves away from the body while a person is lying prone.
Martinez was administered treatment for almost 10 minutes before being placed on a stretcher with his arms folded across his chest. He seemed responsive while he was carried off the field and seemed to be in tears amid a chorus of applause from the visiting fans.
