Argentina are just one win away from their fourth FIFA World Cup title.

Argentina have defeated England 2-0 to secure a berth in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, courtesy of an assist from Morgan Rogers. However, La Albiceleste completed another historic comeback to reach the final.

Enzo Fernandez scored a screamer from outside the box to level the score for the defending champions, courtesy of an assist from Lionel Messi. Later, the 39-year-old assisted Lautaro Martínez’s winner in the injury time (90+2′). Despite the defeat, the Three Lions’ gritty effort will be remembered by the football fans.

On that note, let’s take a look at the five key takeaways from the FIFA World Cup 2026 clash:

5. Emiliano Martinez fails to keep a clean sheet for the 5th consecutive time

Emiliano Martinez was arguably the best goalkeeper at the last FIFA World Cup. He started the 2026 edition run strongly, as he did not concede a single goal against Algeria or Austria. However, since then, the Aston Villa custodian has failed to follow the same path.

He conceded twice against Cape Verde and Egypt. Once again against Switzerland in the quarterfinal, and later, Anthony Gordon netted his first FIFA World Cup goal against them in the semifinals. While he has been expected to be the side’s key player, he has emerged as a weak link.

4. The whole English team was defending in the 2nd half

England sat on the back seat as soon as Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. The whole team was defending their goal with great intensity. At specific occasions, the Three Lions’ frontman and captain, Harry Kane, cleared the ball in the final third.

The English captain was everywhere in the game and had more defensive contributions than shots. The second half was dominated by Argentina in terms of attacking opportunities and possession, as they made attacking changes, and Thomas Tuchel fielded three centre-backs to frustrate the three-time champions.

3. Djed Spence has made a name for himself

Following his last match, English legend Rio Ferdinand took to social media to laud Spence. And facing one of the best sides in global football, the 25-year-old has continued to perform brilliantly.

With a high work rate, the Tottenham Hotspur defender kept Giuliano Simeone on his toes. He had nine defensive contributions against La Albiceleste, the most by any English player, while he kept making runs from one side to another. Meanwhile, his last-man tackle while Simeone was in a one-on-one position with Jordan Pickford will be the highlight of the game.

2. Thomas Tuchel’s defensive approach did not work

Thomas Tuchel’s decision to start Morgan Rogers on the left wing over Noni Madueke and Bukayo Saka worked as the Aston Villa midfielder provided an assist to Anthony Gordon. However, the German tactician’s decision to put the whole team in a defensive mode did not help the side.

Anthony Gordon was subbed out to bring in Ezri Konsa. While Dan Burn was introduced at Declan Rice’s spot, this decreased the sides’ depth and layers. Eventually, the former Chelsea boss had to bring in Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney to boost the attack, but it was too late.

1. Argentina becomes the second nation to reach consecutive FIFA World Cup finals twice

Argentina have become the second nation to play in two consecutive FIFA World Cup finals on two separate occasions. They reached the milestone for the first time under Diego Maradona’s captaincy in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups.

La Albiceleste have scripted history by reaching two consecutive finals for the second time. After winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, they will face Spain in the 2026 summit clash on July 19. The only other nation to have played in back-to-back World Cup is Brazil (1958, 1962) and (1994, 1998).

Who will Argentina play in their final?

Spain
