Top five countries who are title contenders at Euro 2020

The UEFA Euro 2020 will see a number top European countries face each other to become the champions of of the continent. The Euro is hailed as one of the fiercest international events in football due to the level of competition between the participating nations.

There are many teams, who will look forward to stake claim on the trophy once the tournament begins. Some of the top-ranked nations in the world are playing at Euro 2020 and the eyes will certainly be on them.

The following five countries have the firepower and the depth to become the champions. Here are the five favourites to win the UEFA Euro 2020.

5. Italy

Italy have been resurgent after missing FIFA World Cup 2018

They have a nice blend of experience and youth in its ranks. This Serie A season saw several top talents come to the fore, who will now represent the country at the international level. Italy are the favourites to qualify into the knockouts from Group A, which involves teams like Wales, Turkey and Switzerland.

Moreover, Roberto Mancini's side are also entering the tournament on the back of a brilliant undefeated streak. The Azzurri are unbeaten in their last 27 matches, a feat that dates back to September 2018. Players like Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne and Andrea Belotti will lead their charge.

4. Belgium

Belgium is the top-ranked team in the FIFA World Rankings heading into the tournament. The squad has an abundance of world-class talent in every position to challenge for the title. The golden generation of Belgian players need to deliver a major international trophy and Euro 2020 is a perfect opportunity. 

Belgium will look to navigate through Group B with relative ease against teams like Denmark, Finland and Russia. Their ranks have some serial match-winners like Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

3. England

The fourth-place finish in 2018 World Cup was England's best finish in a FIFA competition since 1990

England have a strong squad heading to Euro 2020, with all players having a strong season in the Premier League. The Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia against expectations. The young squad back then has matured and will look to challenge for the trophy.

Gareth Southgate is spoilt for choices when it comes to team selection. The tactician will have the likes of Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden to choose from. The expectations are high from the Three Lions on this occasion.

2. Portugal

Portugal are the defending champions as they won the Euro 2016 by defeating France in a nail-biting final. They also won the UEFA Nations League in 2019. Having said that, qualifying into the playoffs will be a tough assignment considering they find themselves in Group F - the Group of Death. Portugal will however favour their chances due to the attacking talent in their squad.

Players like Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix and Andre Silva are all match winners. Furthermore, they also have Cristiano Ronaldo to make all the differences. Considering these could be the final European championships for Ronaldo, he’d hope to sign off as a winner.

France lifted their second FIFA World Cup title in 2018

The French national team is the reigning world champions heading into Euro 2020. The outfit will hope to clinch the trophy after missing out on it during the 2016 edition. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winners have a serious attacking depth in their squad, who can terrify any opposition defence on their day.

France are one of the favourites for the title, but will need to be on their guard from the first game itself. The Group F is the toughest one to qualify from as it involves teams like Germany, Portugal and Hungary.

Players like Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba will hope to deliver once again on the big stage.
