Manchester United made a fast start at Merseyside, and the hosts were caught by surprise by Luke Shaw’s marauding run down the left. His cross was headed back by Bryan Mbeumo. Bruno Fernandes attempted an incredible flick mid-air that clattered against the bar.

The hosts, however, responded brilliantly. They stitched together several attacking passes, although the final ball was missing. The equaliser came in the 83rd minute. Hayden Hackney got to the end of a loose ball before teeing up Tyrique George, who hit a stunner from outside the box that flew past Senne Lammens.

However, the lead lasted just four minutes. Fernandes fed Shaw down the left flank, and the full-back’s inviting cross found the head of Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian’s bullet header beat Pickford, clinching an incredible comeback victory for the visitors.

There were more twists and turns to come in the match. Everton continued to push hard in search of an equaliser, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored an incredible long-range goal in the 96th minute to secure a point for the home side.

1. Lack of strikers hurt the hosts

Despite Everton’s unbeaten run, there was a gloomy mood around the Hill Dickinson Stadium, mainly due to the home side’s abysmal transfer window. Barry was the only senior striker in the squad, and David Moyes was forced to name 18-year-old Braiden Graham on the bench.

The lack of an alternative No. 9 clearly showed in the Toffees’ blunt attack, which failed to trouble Senne Lammens in the early stages of the match. Barry, normally a target attacker, failed to get in the game completely. He had a brilliant headed opportunity in the 43rd minute but steered his effort wide.

Merlin Rohl, usually a central midfielder, has done a remarkable job at right-back this season. However, the German youngster found it too difficult today to deal with the threat of Marcus Rashford. The former Barcelona winger enjoyed a lot of freedom down the left flank, making several key passes and creating some chances. Unless the Toffees can add a seasoned right-back in the January transfer window, Rohl is going to be targeted by the opposition managers in the coming matches.

3. Mainoo shows his worth

After being frozen out by Ruben Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo has enjoyed a second lease of life under Michael Carrick. The youngster was brilliant in his first league start against Ipswich Town and continued that rich vein of form today. He was at the heart of the United midfield, making the most defensive contributions of any player in a red jersey. He also set up Mbeumo’s opener with a simple but elegant pass.

4. Injury concern for Garner

James Garner was one of the best players on the pitch for Everton, dominating proceedings in the middle of the park before being shifted to right-back at the hour mark. However, the former Manchester United youngster went down soon after, clutching his thigh. He looked like he was in significant pain, and Moyes replaced him with new signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Everton’s squad is paper-thin as is, and the head coach will hope that Garner’s injury is not as serious as it looked.

5. Hackey makes the difference

Hayden Hackney, the 2026 EFL Championship Player of the Season, came on as a substitute in the second half. The former Middlesbrough man immediately injected pace and energy into the Everton midfield, and set up Tyrique George’s goal with a delicious long pass. The goal itself was a stunner from George, but Hackney was a major reason why the hosts were able to clinch the equaliser.
