Spain are among the tournament favourites in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, with the European champions scheduled to face France in the semi-finals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 14.
Fabian Ruiz has been one of La Roja’s surprise heroes, scoring the vital opening goal against Belgium in the quarter-finals. It was the seventh international goal for the Paris Saint-Germain player and his first in the quadrennial tournament.
It was a moment of redemption for Ruiz. The midfielder started the first match against Cape Verde, which ended in a goalless draw. Despite his solid showing in that game, he was dropped to the bench for the next two games, playing 20 and 30 minutes, respectively.
He then played a total of six minutes across the following two matches. He was a surprising inclusion in the starting lineup for the match against Belgium, replacing Pedri. Luis de la Fuente’s gamble paid off, with the midfielder finding the back of the net in the 30th minute.
