He made his first-ever appearance on the world stage in 2026.

Mikel Merino is a player for the Spain national football team and the English Premier League club Arsenal. He is originally a central midfielder who can also fill in as a striker for both his club and country. The 30-year-old is now representing La Roja at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Merino began his footballing journey with the youth team of the Spanish club CA Osasuna. In 2014, he finally made his senior club debut for the team. Later, he went on to join the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, but with underwhelming performances, he was loaned to Newcastle United and later made his move permanent with the Premier League club.

The peak of his career was when the LaLiga side Real Sociedad signed him. Mikel Merino was at the club for six years and became one of the most consistent midfielders in the Spanish top division. Arsenal went on to sign him in 2024 and he is currently playing for them.

He made his debut for the Spain national football team in 2020. Merino played an important role in helping La Roja clinch the UEFA Euro 2024 title after scoring the match-winning goal against Germany

Even though the fixture did not see many goals flying, it was an intense contest for both teams. Neither of these nations was looking to bow out of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The game was heading into extra time and then Mikel Merino happened. Luis de la Fuente brought him on late as a substitute. Merino went on to break the deadlock and scored the match-winning goal for La Roja, helping them secure a spot in the quarterfinal.

It was another close clash in the 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup. These nations were battling it out for a spot in the semifinals. The Spain national football team, as usual, controlled the tempo of the game. They scored the opening goal, but conceded a goal late in the second half. There was nothing to separate the two sides. La Roja came in with multiple attempts but failed to score. Mikel Merino was brought on in the 86th minute and just two minutes later, he scored another match-winner for Spain.
