FC Goa vs Regar-TadAZ: Three key player battles to watch out for

FC Goaโ€™s AFC Challenge League campaign begins against Tajikistan Champions Regar-TadAZ.

FC Goa won the AIFF Super Cup to earn a continental spot, then lost 0-3 to FK Arkadag in the AFC Champions League Two preliminary stage, dropping into the Challenge League, Asiaโ€™s third tier. They start their AFC Challenge League campaign on 17th October, Saturday against Tajikistan side Regar TadAZ

Group stage is a sprint, not a campaign. There is only one automatic quarter-final spot, and the group is played in a centralised format between October 17 and 24. A first-match slip can end the group.

Regar-TadAZ are no minnows either. They are the competitionโ€™s most successful club with three titles (when it was AFC Presidentโ€™s Cup), and Tajikistan Cup 2025 winners. They beat Maziya 3-0 in the preliminary stage and won the Tajik Super Cup against Istiklol in May.

With Gouramangi Singh in his first full season as head coach and Tukhtaevโ€™s side organised, the match will turn on individuals more than systems. Here are a three key player battles to keep a close eye on during the FC Goa vs Regar-TadAZ match in the AFC Challenge League.

Sandesh Jhingan vs Sherzod Makhamadiev

FC Goa vs Regar-TadAZ: Three key player battles to watch out for
Sandesh Jhingan is the most experienced centre backs of Indian Football.

Goaโ€™s captain against Regarโ€™s centre-forward is the headline duel. Whoever Tukhtaev builds his attack around, Makhamadiev is the man Goaโ€™s back line has to solve.

Jhingan is 185 cms tall and weighs 78kg. At 33 he wins aerial duels through positioning and reading the game more than raw pace. The risk is recovery speed if he is dragged into the channels. Makhamadiev, 29, is a Tajik forward whose game is likely built on movement and contact, but his output in the AFC competitions has been modest. Albeit the Tajik player is on red hot form accounting to most assists for the Tajik side.

If Jhingan wins first contact and keeps Regarโ€™s direct balls from sticking, Goa can push their line high and squeeze the pitch. If Makhamadiev pins him and lays the ball off, the space Goa leave behind becomes the problem.

รlex Vallejo vs Nozim Babajanov

The best creative player in Tajik football against Goaโ€™s anchor. Vallejo, the Spanish defensive midfielder, was Goaโ€™s second foreign signing of the summer, brought in to provide balance when the attackers push forward.

An attacking midfielder, 1.73m, Babajanov is no stranger to Indian Footaball and its dynamics, with a CV that includes Real Kashmir. He is small and shifty, so Vallejo has to avoid lunging and pin him with position. Vallejo, 34, brings Segunda Divisiรณn, Championship and Hungarian top-flight experience, but his legs are the question over a short, compressed tournament.

If Babajanov gets turned and facing goal between the lines, Goaโ€™s centre-backs are exposed. If Vallejo screens him out and recycles possession, Regar lose their only reliable source of creativity.

Christian Borrego vs Joseph Feumba

FC Goa vs Regar-TadAZ: Three key player battles to watch out for
Chiki scored FC Goaโ€™s lone goal in their ISL draw against Chennaiyin FC.

Goaโ€™s Spanish forward against the Cameroonian centre-back at the heart of Regarโ€™s defence. Christian Borrego, better known as Chiki, has already hinted at his arrival to India with an equalizer against Chennaiyin in the ISL.

Feumba is likely to be the physical presence in Regarโ€™s back line, built for duels and headers. Borrego is a Spanish forward whose best work usually comes from movement, dropping off and turning, rather than outmuscling a big defender.

Borrego has to keep dragging Feumba out of his comfort zone. If the defender stays deep and compact, Goaโ€™s chances must come from the flanks and late runs. If Borrego pulls him wide, the gaps open for Goaโ€™s wide men.
