It is a moment of immense pride for India to host the grand event.

The upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will take place from October 11, 2022 onwards in India. A total of 16 women’s U-17 national teams from six confederations will be participating to win the prestigious tournament that will run until 30 October 2022. The World Cup was supposed to take place in 2020 but had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. India had lost the hosting rights recently after receiving a FIFA ban, but recovered them swiftly after the ban was rescinded.

The anticipation for the tournament is high amongst the host nation and the football fans. Judging by the successful organisation of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup (men’s), one can expect a lot of entertainment from the upcoming edition. It will also further India’s image as a capable host of major football events. Furthermore, it will give the Indian U-17 women’s team a chance to impress as the world will focus its eyes on them.

Here are the key details about the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India as it approaches the opening day:

About the Tournament

The India edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will be the seventh edition of the tournament. Inaugurated in 2008, North Korea are the most successful nation in the tournament history with two titles. South Korea, France, Japan, and Spain are teams to have won it previously.

Spain are the defending champions having lifted the 2018 edition in Uruguay where they beat Mexico 2-1 in the final. The latest edition was supposed to be held in India in 2020. However, it had to be postponed twice due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Teams & Groups

The 16 teams are divided into four groups consisting of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will move on into the knockout stages where quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final will take place. India, Tanzania and Morocco are three debutant countries that will hope to have a good tournament and go past the group stages.

Group A

Group A consists of hosts India, 2008 runners-up the United States of America, Morocco and Brazil. It will be tough for the host nation to qualify from the group but football has a tendency to cause upsets when one least expects them. Brazil and USA will be favourites to qualify for the knockouts.

Group B

Germany, Nigeria, Chile and New Zealand complete Group B. On paper, it looks like a tough group for all teams and is hard to predict. New Zealand finished third during the previous edition but repeating that performance will be difficult.

Group C

Defending champions Spain is in Group C and will face Colombia, Mexico and China. Interestingly, Mexico and Spain met in the final of the previous U17 Women’s World Cup. They will hope to finish as the top two teams in this group.

Group D

Group D consists of Japan, Canada, Tanzania and France. It will be a three-way battle for the top two places while Tanzania will hope to punch above their weight and cause an upset at the tournament.

India's Squad and Schedule

India will be a debutant at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after gaining automatic qualification being the host nation. A 23-member team had travelled to Spain for an exporsure tour. The Indian U-17 team played two games there, losing 1-3 to Sweden and smashing WSS Barcelona Club 17-1. Their game against Andorra was called off due to bad weather.
