The Round of 16 stage of the FIFA World Cup will end on July 7.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout phase is heating up, with the best teams in the world trying to book a place in the quarter-finals of the expanded 48-team edition in North America. Norway joined Canada and France as the third team to seal their place in the last eight with a shock 2-1 win over Brazil in their Round of 16 clash at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 5.
The first half was a goalless affair, in which Patrick Berg found the back of the net in the third minute but it was ruled out due to offside. The Selecao then had a penalty in the 12th minute, but it was saved by Orjan Nyland.
Both sides continued to carve out chances, but the breakthrough came in the 79th minute. It came from a cross into the box by substitute Andreas Schjelderup, which was met by Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker’s header flew past Alisson Becker and into the back of the net.
Haaland added a second goal in the 90th minute with a stunning strike from outside the box. The rocket strike flew into the top corner, giving the Brazilian goalkeeper absolutely no chance. Neymar scored a late penalty, but it proved to be a mere consolation for the Selecao. The result sealed their place in the quarter-finals, where they join Morocco and France.
