Five records created by Italy in their Euro 2020 win over Switzerland

The Azzurri seem unstoppable and continue to extend a few incredible streaks with each passing game.

Roberto Mancini’s Italy look one of the strong contenders at the Euro 2020. They have already qualified from the group stages following victories over Turkey and Switzerland. The Italians remain undefeated in Group A and will play Wales next to solidify the top spot in the standings. One can certainly expect the Italians to refrain from showing any form of complacency against Wales.

However, the victory against Switzerland did not come as a shock. The previous performance of the Italians has been unbelievably good as they continued it with a 3-0 victory. Here are five major records that they set with the win over Switzerland:

5. First team to book a place in the knockout stages

Italy were hailed as one of the dark horses for Euro 2020 but now look as one of the favourites to lift the trophy altogether. After winning their opening two games in Group A against Turkey and Switzerland, they became the first team to secure a berth in the Round of 16.

Roberto Mancini has found an incredible balance in the team which is strong in every department. The blend of experience and young talent is also noteworthy. They can rest some key players against Wales but the top spot is up for grabs which ensures an easier opponent in the knockout round.

4. 10 wins in a row

Italy have now won both of their Euro 2020 games so far and are the only team to do so yet. However, their winning prowess stretches beyond the Euros. Before coming into the tournament, the Italians were on an eight match winning run.

The win against Switzerland was their 10th successive victory. The last match where Italy could not emerge as victors was against Netherlands back in October 2020 during a UEFA Nations League game (1-1 draw). Since then, they have beaten Estonia, Poland, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, San Marino, Czech Republic, Turkey and Switzerland.

3. 10 clean sheets in a row

Italy’s defensive record justifies their status of being traditionally solid at the back. The nation is famous for producing some of the finest defenders in the history of the game and their squad is usually tough to break down.

The last 10 games have been victories, but more impressively, Italy have kept a clean sheet in each of those matches. They have also looked particularly solid in the first two Euro fixtures. If they keep up their performances, scoring against them would be too big of a task.

2. Undefeated in the last 29 games

Italy is respected in the international stage for various justified reasons. People have started taking notice of them recently but they have been impressive on a consistent basis. One of their many ongoing streaks is the undefeated streak. The Italians are undefeated in their last 29 games on the international circuit.

The last time they were defeated was against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League. That defeat came back on 11 September 2018.  Three years from that disappointment, the Azzurri have not tasted defeat again since.

1. 31 goals scored since conceding their last goal

In terms of playing attacking football, the Italians are a genuine threat. While defending is an art perfected by the them, they are also lethal going forward. The last time Italy conceded a goal was against Netherlands, scored by Manchester United’s Donny Van de Beek. 

In the 10 matches since, Italy has scored 31 goals without conceding a single one. They are tough to break down and harder to contain. The outfit is a constant attacking threat with players like Lorenzo Insigne and Ciro Immobile among others. They have already scored six goals in two games at the Euros.
