Flamengo vs Sao Paulo Preview - prediction, team news, lineups | Brazilian Serie A 2026

Leonardo Jardim’s Flamengo eye closing the gap with table toppers Palmeiras with a win over struggling Sao Paulo.

Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, gears up to host the Brazilian Serie A Round 20 fixture. The home team, Flamengo and Morumbi outfit Sao Paulo are set to lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling contest in Cidade Maravilhosa.

Flamengo are placed second in the points table just behind Palmeiras, who are seven points clear at the top. The Rio outfit won four out of their last five games and are coming off a 4-0 win over Chapecoense AF. They will have revenge in their minds as Sao Paulo won the last meeting 2-1 back in January 2026.

They are led by Portuguese gaffer Leonardo Jardim, who has massive experience coaching across various regions. He has managed top European clubs like AS Monaco and Sporting CP, and moved to the Middle East with Al Hilal before putting pen to paper to sign a new deal with Flamengo.

Sao Paulo are ranked 12th in the points table, and a win can take them as high as seventh. In a highly competitive season where every point counts, they must not settle for anything less than all three points. They are coming after back-to-back defeats to Paranaense and Remo.

Former Brazil national team gaffer Dorival Junior leads them. He must eye taking Sao Paulo back to winning ways with a win over Flamengo. In the head-to-head between these two sides, Sao Paulo are ahead slightly with 15 wins, whereas Flamengo have won 14 while 10 games have ended in a draw.

Success in Brazil’s top flight relies less on reputation and more on psychological resilience, adaptations, and the survival of the fittest. In a highly competitive season, every goal adds up, every goal-line clearance matters, and every point counts. Fans can expect a thrilling contest between the two sides.

Players to Watch

Jorginho (Flamengo)

The Italian defensive midfielder made a move to his country of birth after winning the UEFA Champions League with Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea and playing for London rivals Arsenal in 2025. A world-class playmaker, Jorginho even propelled Italy to win the Euros in 2021.

After making a move from the Emirates, Jorginho has established himself as the tactical metronome of Leonardo Jardim’s setup. He has already scored three goals so far in 19 games. He will be keen to dominate the pocket-sized midfield battles against Sao Paulo.

Jonathan Calleri (Sao Paulo)

The Buenos Aires-born veteran Argentine striker Calleri has played for top European teams like West Ham United, Espanyol and Las Palmas before making a move back to Sao Paulo for his second innings. In 31 games so far, Calleri has scored 11 and has given three assists.

He will be up against a Brazilian defence of Flamengo. The Argentine captain must lead his side from the front. He will look to grab a goal and take the lead before Flamengo start taking control with their excellent playmakers.

He remains the central striking focal point for Sao Paulo FC. He will be a player to watch out for.
