Kylian Mbappé has now scored eight goals for France in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

France defeated Morocco 2-0 to become the first team to advance to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With that, no African team remains in the summer competition.

The game started with France taking the lead in the attack. Les Bleus got their first serious goalscoring opportunity in the 4th minute, but it was eventually saved by Yassine Bounou. Later, after a foul by Noussair Mazraoui, Mbappe was awarded a penalty, which he eventually missed.

In the second half, Kylian Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 60th minute before providing an assist to Ousmane Dembele only six minutes later. Despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals, it’s fair to say that the Altas Lions had a memorable campaign.

On that note, let’s take a look at the five key takeaways from the FIFA World Cup 2026 clash:

5. Warren Zaïre-Emery finally gets minutes for France

Warren Zaire-Emery finally managed to get featured in a FIFA World Cup game after he came in at Kouadio Kone’s spot in the 71st minute. He came up as Les Bleus’ first substitute in the game, as Aurelien Tchouameni is currently on the sidelines due to a groin injury.

4. Two different Moroccan sides in two halves

The Atlas Lions started that game with confidence as they looked keen on battling until the end for a spot in the semi-finals against Didier Deschamps’ men. In the first half, despite the French side making constant advancements, Morocco looked sharp as they were not letting the two-time champions penetrate their last line of defence.

However, everything changed in the second half. They looked great at the start of the first half, but as soon as Mbappe’s curled shot went inside the goal, the momentum shifted, and Mohamed Ouahbi’s side started losing faith.

3. Yassine Bounou was Morocco’s best player

The only reason Morocco managed to keep a clean sheet in the first half was Yassine Bounou. The 35-year-old made four saves, including a penalty by France captain Kylian Mbappe. However, in the second half, everything scattered as soon as the Real Madrid attacker found the back of the net.

The team’s confidence took a blow; they made substitutions, but nothing seemed to work. The Atlas Lions were unable to withstand the constant attacks from the two-time champions and conceded in quick succession.

2. Kylian Mbappe’s worst first half and then return

Kylian Mbappe, who had scored three braces in five games for the two-time champions before the quarterfinal clash, gave the worst first-half performance against the Atlas Lions. The Frenchman has a passing accuracy of less than 80 per cent and had only one shot on target, which was the missed penalty.

However, the French side revamped itself in the second half. They launched constant attacks and eventually scored in the 60th minute, courtesy of an assist from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) attacker Desire Doué. Six minutes later, he also provided an assist to Ousmane Dembele.

1. Morocco’s 34-match unbeaten streak comes to an end

Before losing against Les Bleus, Morocco were on a 34-match unbeaten streak across all competitions. The streak includes their controversial triumph over Senegal in the 2026 African Cup of Nations final. The win was awarded retroactively to the Atlas Lions.

However, other than that, they had not lost a single game since August 2025. Their last defeat on the international stage came against Kenya, 1-0. However, the African heavyweights would have to restart the record now.

Spain or Belgium
