Spain eliminated France in the semi-finals of the 2024 UEFA Euros.
FIFA World Cup 2026, which began a month ago and has given fans across the globe sleepless nights and unforgettable emotions, watching their favourite teams win, lose, secure qualification, get eliminated, or witnessing underdogs create history, is now approaching its climax, with 101 of the 104 matches already completed.
Spain, the champions of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will take on France, the champions of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, in the first semi-final of the tournament. The match is scheduled to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, United States, on July 14.
The fixture is a rematch of the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final and 2025 UEFA Nations League semi-finals, where these two nations met for a place in the final. Spain emerged victorious on that occasion, but France, the runners-up of the previous FIFA World Cup, will be hoping to get their revenge and book a place in a third consecutive World Cup final.
France have cruised into the semi-finals with six wins from six matches. They defeated Sweden in the Round of 32, Paraguay in the Round of 16, and Morocco in the quarter-finals, progressing through each knockout round without conceding a single goal.
Spain, on the other hand, have also enjoyed an impressive campaign, although their performances have not always been as convincing as many expected. They have remained defensively solid while doing enough in attack to edge past Austria, Portugal, and Belgium in the knockout rounds to secure a place in the last four.
The clash between these two European giants has all the ingredients of a final, with two of the tournament favourites set to battle it out in Dallas. Here are five players who could play a decisive role in their nation’s quest for a place in the FIFA World Cup final.
Top five players to watch out for in France vs Spain
| S.No. | Player Name | Country |
| 1 | Kylian Mbappe | France |
| 2 | Lamine Yamal | Spain |
| 3 | Ousmane Dembele | France |
| 4 | William Saliba | France |
| 5 | Pau Cubarsi | Spain |
5. Pau Cubarsi

One of Spain’s biggest strengths at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been their defensive solidity. The backline of Unai Simon, Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi, and Pedro Porro has conceded just one goal throughout the tournament, which came in the quarter-final against Belgium.
At just 19 years of age, Pau Cubarsi has played a crucial role in that record. The Barcelona defender has brought composure and stability to the Spanish defence with his exceptional positioning and ability to read danger before it develops. He is also an outstanding ball-playing centre-back, capable of carrying possession forward and helping Spain build attacks from the back.
4. William Saliba
Like Spain, France have also enjoyed an outstanding defensive campaign, conceding just two goals throughout the tournament. With William Saliba on the pitch, however, they have conceded only once, a late goal against Senegal. Facing a fluid Spanish attack that constantly rotates positions, Saliba’s presence will be vital for France.
He is calm under pressure, positions himself brilliantly, and is consistently in the right place to deal with crosses and through balls. Physically dominant and clean in his tackling, Saliba rarely loses either aerial or ground duels, while his recovery pace makes him well-equipped to deal with the movement of Dani Olmo, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Lamine Yamal.
3. Ousmane Dembele

The 2025 Ballon d’Or winner has carried his sensational form into 2026. After winning the UEFA Champions League and Ligue 1, Ousmane Dembele has continued to shine at the FIFA World Cup, leading France’s attack alongside Kylian Mbappe. He has registered five goals and two assists in the tournament so far.
Alongside Doue, Olise, and Mbappe, Dembele forms part of one of the most fluid attacking units in world football. The quartet constantly interchange positions, making them extremely difficult to mark. Dembele can create chances, beat defenders with explosive acceleration, link up play, finish with either foot, or make intelligent runs into the box, making him one of the most complete forwards in the game today.

2. Lamine Yamal

Although Lamine Yamal has not quite reached the extraordinary standards he has set for himself, he remains Spain’s biggest attacking threat down the right flank. He has scored just once in the tournament but could enjoy more freedom against Lucas Digne, who can be vulnerable defensively.
Yamal needs little introduction. He is one of the most exciting young players in world football and a footballer who fans happily pay to watch. His ability to beat defenders with ease, wiggle past players in tight spaces, and create chances from almost impossible situations makes him a constant danger.
The Barcelona winger also possesses a trademark trivela cross, capable of unlocking defenses in an instant, while his decision-making in the final third is exceptional for a player of his age.
1. Kylian Mbappe

Speaking about the FIFA World Cup without mentioning Kylian Mbappe would be impossible. The French captain has been one of the best players across the last three World Cups, scoring an astonishing 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances, with eight of those coming in this edition alone.
He scored a brace against Sweden in the Round of 32, netted the winner against Paraguay in the Round of 16, and opened the scoring against Morocco in the quarterfinals, once again proving why he thrives on the biggest stage.
Mbappe will face one of the strongest defenses in the tournament, but his quality is impossible to ignore. A ruthless finisher, devastating in open space, capable of scoring from distance, beating defenders one-on-one, and linking play like a false nine, Mbappe possesses every attribute required to change a game. He will be determined to lead France into a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final.
