Lamine Yamal vs Desire Doue battle in wings to light up first semis of FIFA World Cup 2026

Dallas Stadium in the United States of America gears up to host the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 between two-time world champions France and reigning European champions Spain, in what is set to be a thrilling clash between two of the best European sides.

Les Bleus are eyeing history after qualifying for back-to-back World Cup Finals for the third consecutive edition. Didier Deschamps’ men have convincingly won every single game as they are coming after a 2-0 win over AFCON Champions Morocco in the quarterfinals.

Talking about La Roja, Mikel Merino’s intervention in the final few minutes of the game has been the sole differentiating factor after wins over Portugal and Belgium. Spain’s Golden Generation 2.0 eyes making it to the World Cup Finals for the first time since winning the silverware back in 2010.

Both sides boast some of the finest young talents in their squad. Spain’s coach Luis De La Fuente managed the youth teams of Spain before taking over the reins of the senior team. Similarly, French gaffer Didier Deschamps has also seen the evolution of players like Mbappe and Dembele from young guns to stars.

5. Desire Doue (France)

Desire Doué has been a breakout talent for France, and after making a high-profile move from Rennes to the capital with PSG, he lit up Ligue 1 and went on to win back-to-back UCL titles with Luis Enrique’s PSG. He scored one against Norway and gave an assist against Morocco in the last game.

He has done enough to retain his spot over Barcola on the left wing. He is a high-intensity transition spark plug for Les Bleus, operating with a completely direct and fearless mentality. He will be a key player to watch out for France in the upcoming game.

4. Lamine Yamal (Spain)

A literal footballing phenomenon and the most extraordinary footballing teenager in modern-day football scored one of the earliest goals for Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Saudi Arabia. He has yet to unleash his full potential and impress much, as he did at Euros 2024.

In the Euro 2024 semis, Lamine Yamal literally took on Deschamps’ France, and he will be keen to replicate the same when Spain locks horns with France in the highly anticipated semi-finals.

3. Pau Cubarsi (Spain)

The 19-year-old Spanish defender has been a formidable presence in the Spanish defence, which has conceded just one goal in the entire tournament so far. The Barcelona defender has played every single minute in the World Cup for Spain and has faced top strikers like Ronaldo and Lukaku.

At such a young age, he has shown immense maturity and is one of the strongest contenders to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 Best Young Player Award. He will be up against a world-class French attack boasting Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Dembele.

2. Bradley Barcola (France)

The Villeurbanne-born winger has scored twice and has given an assist so far in the World Cup. He is a two-time UEFA Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain. Deschamps has rotated Doue and Barcola on the left flank, and it will be interesting to see who starts next.

He will be up against Tottenham fullback Pedro Porro, who has been in sublime form. He is a vital creative spark plug for Les Bleus, who will be raring to go all guns blazing against the La Rojas.

The 23-year-old Spanish midfielder is a three-time La Liga champion with FC Barcelona. He is a generational talent who has featured in every single game for Luis De La Fuente’s side in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

From starting games against Austria and Portugal and coming off the bench against Belgium, he has been a key pillar in the midfield for Spain. He will be tasked with the responsibility of keeping the trio of Olise, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele quiet in the semi-finals.
