From Goalkeeper to Goalscorer: Renedy Singh's crazy tactical gamble
Renedy Singh’s Bengaluru FC reserves are unbeaten in the Karnataka Super Division 2026-27
While the whole of India has been speaking about the Blue Tigers’ draw against Panama, their performance against Brazil, Thapa’s goal against Uruguay and the excitement ahead of the start of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season, there is something that happened in the Karnataka Men’s Super Division League 2026-27 that none of you would want to miss out on.
Bengaluru FC Reserves, who compete against several senior teams in the Karnataka Men’s Super Division League 2026-27, took the field for their fifth game of the season against MEG & Centre FC, with both sides unbeaten coming into the game.
Renedy Singh’s side started the game on a positive note, taking an early lead through Nee Hung Subba’s calm and composed finish from the middle of the box, with only the goalkeeper to beat. However, from there, things went south for Bengaluru FC Reserves as they went into the half-time break trailing by a goal after MEG & Centre FC scored twice to take the lead.
Coming into the second half with renewed aggression and determination to fight for all three points, MEG & Centre FC scored yet again to double their advantage and make it 3–1. However, Bengaluru FC were given a slight ray of hope when Prashobh PP fumbled Ashik Adhikari’s strike from a tight angle, allowing the ball to go through his legs at the near post. With their hopes restored, Renedy Singh and his boys pushed for a third with 30 minutes still left to play.

With just 15-odd minutes left in normal time, MEG & Centre FC were heading towards all three points and doing their best to keep Bengaluru FC Reserves at bay. However, Renedy Singh made a brave call in the 77th minute, converting goalkeeper Suraj Singh into an attacker during the second-half drinks break.
From stopping shots in his own box to fighting against defenders in the opposition box, many were left confused by Renedy Singh’s decision.
However, the move worked completely in Bengaluru FC’s favor as the Indian U-20 goalkeeper went on to score the equalizer in the 85th minute. Cyrus Abhilash played a composed back flick near the six-yard box to set up Suraj Singh, who blasted the ball into the back of the net with pure power.
The goal not only surprised the fans and players on the pitch but also brought a sigh of relief to Renedy Singh, who had made a move that could have gone either completely wrong or completely right. In this case, it was the latter.
Suraj did not stop there. In the 89th minute, he almost turned provider as he returned the favour by assisting Cyrus Abhilash with a sitter inside the six-yard box. However, the latter missed the chance miserably and failed to secure the winner that would have guaranteed his side all three points.
While we have heard stories about Pep Guardiola wanting to play Manuel Neuer as an outfield player during his time at Bayern, watched Alisson score his famous winner against West Brom and Anatoliy Trubin find the net against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, and even seen Samik Mitra score from his own half against Dempo in the 2025-26 AIFF Super Cup, Renedy’s move was completely unorthodox and could potentially pave the way for more coaches to try something similar in the future.
