GPL 2019-20: Vasco SC sink Calangute Association

Mathew Colaco scored the only goal for the Port Towners on Saturday afternoon.

Vasco SC registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Calangute Association in the Goa Professional League match played at the Duler Stadium on Saturday. Vasco SC head coach Micky Fernandes made three changes to his side, following a defeat against FC Goa in their previous match. Newly-recruited Nigerian defender Olumide Olowolagba was introduced into the starting XI. While forward Mathew Colaco and keeper Amit Biswas were also back in the squad for the Port Towners. On the other hand, Calangute Association, who lost to Guardian Angel SC in the last match, also had few changes. U-20 player Jobern Cardozo and Alesh Sawant found their names in the playing XI for the Beachside. However, Sanwil's strike missed the target narrowly from inside the box. Vasco SC had two more chances to take the lead in the 37th and 41st minute. The first chance saw Mainoo Dadanuvoor finding Suraj in the box with a long ball. Suraj, in turn, received the ball, but fouled Joaquim Carvalho before finding the back of the net, as assistant referee Yeshwant Parab raised the flag to deny his goal. Two minutes later, Vasco's U-20 player Altaf Navaloor made yet another attempt. However, Suraj failed to convert the chance from close range. At the other end, Calangute Association midfielder Alesh Sawant found Daryl Costa with a brilliant defence-splitting pass. However, Vasco SC custodian Amit charged of6f his line to clear the danger. Calangute Association had a chance in the early minutes of the second half. Vasco SC keeper Amit misplaced a pass to Calangute Association striker Daryl in the box. But, Vasco defender Amit Das smartly snatched the ball from the forward to avert the danger. After failing to score, Vasco SC head coach Micky made two substitutions. He brought on Treyson D'Costa and Ivorian striker Bema Coulibaly to replace Mcleish Pereira and Bibetta respectively. Anil Gaonkar made a curling attempt before Sanwil's header was stopped by Krishnanath Shirodkar. Calangute Association also made two quick attacks on Vasco SC in the next minutes. Akash Kudnekar tried to setup Daryl with a long ball. However, Vasco SC custodian Amit surged ahead to deny the forward. A few minutes later, Daryl was once again setup by Domnic Fernandes with a curler, but his strike was once again collected by Amit. The hard-work finally paid off for the Port Towners. In the 78th minute, Mathew Colaco finished at the far post to make it 1-0 for Vasco SC. The Beachside quickly responded with a swift attack from the restart, but Vasco SC defender Mainoo cleared the danger in time. In the other match of the day, Sporting Clube de Goa and Dempo Sports Club played out a 1-1 draw.
