Joaquim Abranches and Mathew Colaco scored the goal for the Port Towners.

Vasco Sports Club secured a comfortable 2-0 win over defending champions Churchill Brothers in the Goa Pro League match played at Duler Stadium on Friday.

Joaquim Abranches gave a great start to the Port Towners, as he found the net in the 9th minute. While Mathew Colaco came off the bench to secure a win for his side in the second session.

The Port Towners' head coach Micky Fernandes named newly signed Joaquim Abranches, Francisco Fernandes, Kuldeep Kumar and Denil Rebello, along with Vasco’s experienced Suraj Mondal, Sanwil D’Costa and Anil Gaonkar in the starting XI. The Red Machines also had completely shuffled their squad as Mauvin Borges, Clinton Niasso, Jouston Barbosa Bersal Viegas and Velito Cruz found their names in the lineup.

Vasco made a great start to the match, as they took just nine minutes to open their tally. U-20 winger Desmon Gama snatched the ball from Churchill defender Sumer Sehgal and made a low cross to Joaquim in the box. He slid the ball home making it 1-0 to the Port Towners.

Churchill regrouped and launched a series of attacks on their rivals. First, Mauvin found Clinton in the box with a through pass, but the forward failed to put power in his shot, as Vasco custodian Sanju Thapa made an easy collection. The same duo combined once again in another move for the Red Machine in the 18th minute. Mauvin sent a cross to Clinton with just the keeper to beat, but the forward shot wide.

The next few minutes saw Vasco making efforts to double their lead. Anil, Suraj and Joaquim had some individual efforts on goal, but Churchill's backline cleared every danger. At the other end, Mavin found himself in the box with just Vasco custodian Sanju to beat in added-time, but the custodian made a diving save to keep his side in a slender lead at half-time.

Trailing by a goal, Churchill coach Norberto Gonsalves made a double substitution, bringing in Klins Mendes and Landan Mendonca to replace Chandel Fernandes and Sumer.

They also showed the eagerness to find the equalizer as they came close to scoring just after the break. Jouston Barbosa went for glory from just inside the box, but Vasco keeper Sanju Thapa made a brilliant block to keep his side safe. A few minutes later, Churchill’s substitute Landan made a short pass to Clinton in the box, but his weak shot was easily collected by Vasco keeper Sanju.

Leading by a goal, Vasco coach Fernandes brought in Mathew Colaco to replace a tired Suraj in the 69th minute and the striker proved his calibre with his first touch. A lobbed pass from Denil Rebello was nicely collected by him, before producing a lobbed finish over the advancing Churchill keeper to make it 2-0 for his side.

Churchill also had two more chances to find the net, but substitute Trijoy Dias and Bersal Viegas were off target from close range, as Vasco grabbed all three points from their opening match.
