Mohun Bagan in advanced talks with potential sponsor for upcoming season
If it works out, the Mariners' new sponsorship could get them into the ISL next season.
Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan are in advanced talks with a reputed steel manufacturer and might announce them as their sponsors for the upcoming season, reports suggest.
The Mariners have been without a main sponsor for a couple of years now and are currently in humongous debt. However, as reports fueled speculation of the Mariners joining the Indian Super League (ISL) in the coming season, it was also counteracted by the fact that the century-old club did not have a sponsor to enter a cash-rich league such as the ISL.
According to reports, Mohun Bagan are in talks with a 'renowned global steel company,’ and the move could be made official on July 29, the occasion of Mohun Bagan Day, later this month. The announcement is also expected to be accompanied by other details, the nature of which remains unknown at the time of writing.
“We are looking at an amount of ₹40 crores from the annual sponsorship deal and are willing to give them 60% of our stake,” club Secretary Anjan Mitra revealed to Moneycontrol.com.

Earlier, a meeting between President Swapan Sadhan Bose (Tutu Bose), Anjan Mitra, Srinjoy Bose, Debashish Chakraborty and Sohini Mitra decided in favour of turning the club into a public limited company and if the move is similar to that of their arch-rivals East Bengal, the decision will pay dividends. Meanwhile, in a related development, several Mohun Bagan fans protested against the club’s recent policy during their IFA Shield semi-final game against SAIL Burnpur and also made their voice heard regarding the issue of joining the ISL.
“Football is no longer just a sport or entertainment, it is business and Mohun Bagan is learning the tricks of the trade. Anybody who can take the club’s mileage ahead is welcome to do business with us,” Mitra concluded.
