FC Goa 1-1 SC Delhi: Key Takeaways from ISL 2026-27 clash

SC Delhi are yet to register their first win in this season

FC Goa were able to salvage a point in their thrilling 1-1 draw against SC Delhi in the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Fatorda Stadium (Goa) on Wednesday (28 October, 2026). After a drab first half, the game lit up as Juan Pena scored the opening goal in clinical fashion in the 51st minute.

The visitors did an admirable job with their defensive work for the majority of the second half and looked set to be heading towards three points. However, in the 95th minute, Alex Vallejo converted from close range to earn a point for his side and result in a dramatic finish to the clash.

The FC Goa vs SC Delhi clash was basically a game of two halves, as both sides failed to really pick up in the first half – before a lot of drama took place in the second half. Here are the Talking Points from this entertaining ISL clash.

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

4. Muhammed Nemil’s indecisiveness deters FC Goa’s attacking threat

FC Goa were able to create quite a few chances in their clash against SC Delhi, and their winger Muhammed Nemil was at the end of a lot of built-up opportunities. The 24-year-old winger is now playing his fifth ISL season with FC Goa, and after managing three goal involvements in the 2025-26 campaign, there are more expectations from him this time around.

Nemil, however, failed to bring that final bite to finish off the chances created by the FC Goa attack in the SC Delhi clash.

He was entertaining to watch, completing three dribbles, but his final product left a lot more to be desired. Indeed, the 24-year-old was played into the opposition penalty area on multiple occasions, and that enabled him to get at the end of some decent chances. However, his finishing was just not prolific enough – as he couldn’t divert the shots to test the goalkeeper properly and left his teammates frustrated.

Nemil couldn’t create all that many chances either and gave away possession on quite a few occasions. Unless he can bring that spark to his final product, he’s unlikely to be able to elevate the overall threat of FC Goa’s attack.

3. Ashutosh Mehta substitution delay results in major effect of ISL rule

Heading into the final stages of the FC Goa vs SC Delhi clash, it looked like the visitors had the win all wrapped up. Tomasz Tchorz, however, felt that his side needed a bit more defensive resolve in the final minutes to see his team over the line. As a result, he opted to take off the seemingly injured Rodriguinho and bring on a reliable defender in Ashutosh Mehta instead.

However, that substitution was the cause of some interesting late drama in the ISL clash. The Brazilian forward didn’t look all that comfortable, as he hobbled his way off the field of play and wasted quite a lot of time as FC Goa were ready to take a free kick.

Once Rodriguinho went off the pitch, Mehta felt that he could come on and wanted the fourth official’s green light to do so. However, Mehta was disallowed from entering the field of play because of the new 10-second rule that has been implemented for substitutions in the ISL. Basically, to curb time-wasting tactics, players are given 10 seconds to go away from the field of play when they are to be substituted.

As Rodriguinho surpassed that, Mehta was forced to stay away from the pitch for one minute because of this newly implemented rule. SC Delhi had to defend the FC Goa set-piece with 10 men, allowing Vallejo to get all that free space to score the equaliser – teaching a major lesson to Tchorz and his players.

2. Chiki-Franchu duo yet to hit top gear for FC Goa

FC Goa were able to play some entertaining attacking football in the clash against SC Delhi, but their star foreigners, Chiki and Franchu, didn’t connect as well as their fans would want. The two new summer signings have gotten a few games to build on their chemistry, with fans expecting them to lead them to inspire the Gaurs to play some thrilling attacking football. However, the duo couldn’t really cause all that many problems for the SC Delhi backline together.

Chiki was not able to get to the end of any prominent chances, only creating a few opportunities and being neutralised by the centre-backs. Franchu had a much better game, even setting up the equaliser, but he wasn’t able to really feed the Spanish forward the kind of balls he wanted inside the opposition area.

The Chiki-Franchu duo are clearly still a work in progress, but fans will hope they can hit top gear soon to rain in the goals for the Gaurs.

1. SC Delhi’s patient approach fails to bear major rewards

Juan Pena scored the first goal of the game.

SC Delhi have produced some entertaining football in their 2026-27 ISL matches so far, but they seemed to be more conservative in their approach against FC Goa. They were barely able to threaten the hosts in the first half, only getting one shot on target and just not being able to create enough chances.

Things improved for Tchorz’s side in the second half, as they surprised the Gaurs with their pressing and quicker counter-attacks in the final third. That enabled SC Delhi to score the opener, capitalising on a mistake made by Udanta Singh in his half.

However, rather than really pushing for a second goal, they seemed to be happy to sit on that one goal and try to see out the game. Tchorz’s plan almost worked out, until it didn’t. They ended up conceding a very late equaliser, forcing them to only go away with one point.

SC Delhi were just too patient with their build-up play and the general tempo of their attacks, not pouring as many bodies forward as necessary to really put the Gaurs under pressure. Ultimately, their cagey approach came back to haunt them and resulted in a frustrating end to the clash.
