East Bengal 0-2 Al-Seeb: Key takeaways from ACL Two 2026-27 clash

East Bengal loses 0-2 against Al Seeb in Kolkata.

East Bengal FC hopes to qualify for the 2026-27 AFC Champions League Two knockout stages took a major hit after it was beaten 2-0 by Oman club Al Seeb in their group stage clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Tuesday.

Poor finishing comes back to haunt East Bengal as its winless run continues in the AFC Champions League Two 2026-27.

The Red and Gold Brigade dominated large parts of the game but failed to keep their concentration in the dying moments, allowing Al Seeb to score twice in six minutes.

The result leaves Antonio Habas’ side fourth in its group with two points from four games, while Al Seeb climbs to third with four points.

An early injury to Anwar Ali and East Bengal’s wastefulness in front of goal proved costly as the Torchbearers suffered another setback in their continental campaign.

Here are five major talking points from East Bengal’s disappointing defeat against Al-Seeb.

1. East Bengal’s lack of clinical finish proved costly.

East Bengal’s inability to convert their goal-scoring opportunities in the final third once again proved costly. The Red and Gold Brigade started positively with an attacking approach, creating promising chances through David Hmar, Edmund Lalrindika, Dani Ramírez, Mohammed Rashid and Bipin Singh.

However, their lack of composure in front of goal prevented them from converting those opportunities. Rashid’s missed chance from close range in the first half was particularly costly, while Ramírez also failed to capitalise on promising situations.

The home side continued to create chances in the second half, with Ake Loba and Lukasz Zwoliński also creating opportunities after coming on as substitutes. However, they failed to breach Al-Seeb’s resolute defence. Their inability to make their attacking dominance count ultimately proved decisive.

2. Anwar Ali’s early injury dealt East Bengal a defensive blow.

Anwar Ali’s early departure due to a hamstring injury came as an early setback for East Bengal. This forced Habas to make immediate tactical adjustments and switch to his alternative plans, bringing on Sandeep Mandi in the 17th minute.

The injury disrupted East Bengal’s defensive organisation, forcing Habas to make an unexpected change to his backline much earlier than anticipated.

Considering Anwar’s importance in organising the defence and neutralising opposition attacks, his absence proved to be a considerable blow. East Bengal managed to keep Al-Seeb’s attacking threats at bay for most of the match, but defensive lapses in the closing stages allowed the visitors to score twice and take away all three points.

3. Al-Seeb delivered when it mattered most

East Bengal enjoyed greater ball possession and created more attacking opportunities throughout the game, but Al-Seeb remained calm and composed, patiently waiting for their moments to strike.

The Omani side allowed East Bengal to dominate possession and frustrated the hosts with their deep defensive approach. However, they raised their intensity when the home side began to look tired towards the closing stages. Al-Seeb patiently waited for openings and exploited the gaps in East Bengal’s defence at crucial moments.

Their approach eventually paid dividends in the 85th minute when Axel Meye found the breakthrough with a composed finish. Zahir Al Aghbari then capitalised on a counter-attacking opportunity in stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt.

4. East Bengal’s substitutions failed to turn the tide.

Antonio López Habas introduced Ake Loba and Rohit Kumar in the 60th minute, followed by Lukasz Zwolinski and Hardik Bhatt in the 71st minute, as he looked to increase the attacking threat.

However, they failed to produce the breakthrough that was expected from them. Loba, although he tried his best, couldn’t deliver what was exactly needed from him at that moment.

Despite adding more firepower to their attacking options, the Red and Gold Brigade failed to create clear-cut opportunities to score the winning goals and clearly lacked coordination in the final third. They couldn’t break through the Al-Seeb defence line.

This will also raise questions about why East Bengal’s attackers were not able to convert clear-cut opportunities into goals in the final third in the continental stage time and again in the competition this year.

5. East Bengal’s knockout qualification hopes hang by a thread

East Bengal’s hopes of making it to the knockout stages have dwindled to just three points from four games.

After four games without a win, the loss puts East Bengal in a challenging situation in Group D. The Torchbearers have now experienced yet another disappointing outcome in their continental campaign, following two draws and one loss.

To maintain their hopes of qualifying, East Bengal will now need to win their remaining group-stage games and hope for other favourable outcomes.

The most important takeaway from this loss for Habas and his team will be how crucial it is to convert opportunities and have defensive focus for the entire ninety minutes.

Even though the Habas-led team’s chances are extremely slim, they must have faith and perform superbly in the final two games.

When are East Bengal’s next matches in the ACL Two 2026-27 group stage?

East Bengal will next face Al-Hussein SC on November 24, 2026, at 7:15 PM IST in Kolkata before travelling to Iraq to take on Al-Shorta SC on December 8, 2026, at 9:30 PM IST in their final ACL Two 2026-27 Group D fixture.
