Three things FC Goa can learn from their defeat to FK Arkadag in AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Stage

FK Arkadag scored 3 goals against FC Goa.
12th August 2026 is a date which every FC Goa fan would want to forget as they lost their AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Stage match against FK Arkadag in a rather embarrassing manner. The Gaurs conceded three goals against the hosts, which surely could have been worse, this means that they have lost the chance to play in AFC Champions League Two 2026-27 and will be participating in the AFC Challenge Cup 2026-27 (3rd tier) now.
The Gaurs lost this match without even putting on a fight. The Turkmen giants throughout the game dominated them on every part of the field and emerged victorious in the end. The rustiness and lack of match sharpness was clearly visible on the players and perhaps they became the victim of this. FC Goa went into this game without playing a single pre-season game in the 2026-27 season making this their first match of this new season.
But the Gaurs can now only take lessons from this game and build up for a season which gives joy to their fans. FC Goa under head coach Gouramangi Singh must now keep their preparations on track as they will not only compete in ISL this season but also will be fighting in the AFC Challenge Cup.
In this article, we will take a look at three things FC Goa can learn from their defeat to FK Arkadag in AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Stage and get better moving forward.
Don’t let the game get away after conceding first

Even though it was just the first game of the 2026-27 season for the Gaurs, one of the biggest things they can learn from the defeat is the importance of staying calm and composed after conceding first. FC Goa throughout the game struggled a lot, especially in the second half they looked completely out of shape, and once the first goal came, the floodgates to more goals quickly opened up.
It all started around the 59th minute mark, when FC Goa initially conceded only for it to be ruled out. However, just after 2 to 3 minutes, Arkadag found the breakthrough and made it 1-0. FC Goa should have regrouped positively after conceding but only three minutes later they conceded another one, putting themselves 2-0 behind.
This was not it, after 12 minutes the hosts scored the third goal at the 75th minute mark to completely put the game to bed.
This is exactly where FC Goa can learn from another Indian club, East Bengal FC, who were playing on the same day in the same competition. Despite conceding the first goal, the Torchbearers refused to let the game slip away from them, remained in the contest till the very last minute and eventually scored a last-minute equaliser before going on to win the game in extra time 4-1 against Al-Arabi SC.
For the Gaurs, it should be clear that conceding one goal should not completely turn into a collapse. There will be moments when you will have your chances and it is said in football that a 1-0 lead is the most dangerous lead, especially in continental football.
FC Goa moving forward need to learn that after conceding first, regrouping, slowing the game and managing the pressure is very important. If a team stays mentally and physically switched on even after conceding first, they are always going to be in the game till the very last minute.
Fix the full back problem

Another major thing that the Gaurs must fix is their full back spot. Sitroy Carvalho and Akash Singh started the game for FC Goa and looked completely disconnected and confused.
FC Goa last year were starting with Boris Singh and Aakash Sangwan, however, Boris Singh left the Gaurs and joined East Bengal FC and there is no clarity over Aakash Sangwan’s participation as he wasn’t even included in the squad for the last game against Arkadag.
Nemil replaced Carvalho early in the first half, however even he was looking a little off throughout the game. FC Goa had some quality full backs over the years however, now this seems to be an area of problem for the Gaurs.
FC Goa have made the signing of Saveme Tariang and Ved Moola, however it still remains to be seen whether they can work in the team or not. So, moving ahead Gouramangi Singh needs to fix this problem for the Gaurs.
More from the experienced players

FC Goa need to get more out of their experienced players, especially in games as such. Sandesh Jhingan, one of India’s most experienced defenders at continental level needed to step up and prove himself with his leadership when FK Arkadag started putting pressure on them.
Similar is the argument for the new big-name arrivals, Alex Zalaya, Chiki and Alex Vallejo all looked completely out of pace and failed to impact the game at all. ISL proven player Franchu also found it rather difficult to make a good impact and create chances for the team.
These are the moments where you need your big players to step up and absorb the pressure so that it doesn’t get to the youngsters in the team. But this didn’t happen against Arkadag and FC Goa failed miserably.
Having said that, it is important to understand that it was FC Goa’s first game in a rebuild and being over critical after just one game would be a little too harsh. This is a team which is going through a rebuild, a new head coach, a new set of foreigners and a new ideology. Players will adapt to this slowly moving forward and they have plenty of quality in the squad and this defeat should be taken as a learning experience of this new era in FC Goa.
