India face Uzbekistan next in a do-or-die clash

India U-17’s solitary hope in Asia in the men’s edition, the India U-17 team kick-started their campaign in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Jeddah against the mighty Australians.

India U-17 were drawn alongside two-time champions North Korea, defending champions Uzbekistan and Australia in Group D. However, India’s road to Asia became a bit easier after North Korea pulled out of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup, due to some unknown circumstances.

After AFC failed to find any replacement, Group D is left with three teams, and a total of three group fixtures will be played between the remaining three teams. The India U-17 team were coming after topping Group D in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup qualification fixture in Australia, after getting the better of Iran in the final game.

Australia, who have previously reached the semi-finals thrice, went on to thrash teams like Iraq, Jordan, Bhutan and the Philippines to emerge as the undisputed table toppers of Group E and make their way to the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026.

It took Australia less than five minutes to break the deadlock as a brilliant pass from Archie Mitchell was buried into the goal by Melbourne City forward Luke Becvinovski in the fifth minute. At the half-hour mark, Akeem Gerald was brought down by the Indian defenders, handing over a penalty to the Australians.

Max Court made no mistake in converting from the spot, and Australia were leading 2-0 after the first 45 minutes. India did try to make a comeback in the game; they missed some easy chances, but it was never easy to beat the Brighton and Hove Albion keeper Charlie Wilson-Papps.

When it seemed that the game was over, Australia went on to score two more in the last quarter, and goals from Luka Demuth and Henrique Oliveira made it four. India’s campaign began in a humiliating fashion against Australia after the game ended 4-0 in favour of Australia.

Can India still qualify for AFC U17 Asian Cup quarterfinals?

The big defeat against Australia has reduced India’s qualification hopes, but mathematically, India U-17 are still alive in the race to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. Let us take a look at various scenarios in which India can qualify for the AFC U17 Asian Cup knockouts.

After North Korea’s withdrawal, we are left with just two matches in Group D, and India U-17 will play their final group stage game against Uzbekistan, and the result of that fixture will decide if India makes it to the next round of the competition.

Case 1: India beats Uzbekistan

This is India U-17’s safest path to qualification right now. However, this sounds easier said than done, as Uzbekistan are among the favourites to win the competition and are the defending champions of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup. Bibiano’s men will need to pull out a miracle against the Uzbeks and do the impossible.

However, after the big defeat to Australia, India’s fate is not in their own hands. If India defeats Uzbekistan, all eyes will be on the final game between Uzbekistan and Australia. If Uzbekistan fails to win that game, India’s qualification berth will be sealed alongside Australia.

However, if Uzbekistan beats Australia, then all teams will be tied at three points each, and it will all boil down to goal difference. So technically, India will need to beat Uzbekistan by a big margin and hope they beat Australia by a small margin to be among the two best teams in goal difference.

Case 2: India plays a draw against Uzbekistan

Anything other than a win in the next game would drastically reduce India’s qualification hopes, but technically, even a draw can keep India’s knockout hopes alive. If India manages to draw against Uzbekistan, both Uzbekistan and India will move to one point each.

However, India will be hoping that Australia beats Uzbekistan in the next game by a big margin so that India will be ahead of Uzbekistan in terms of goal difference, and the Blue Colts will seal the second spot of Group D to make it to the knockouts.

Case 3: India loses to Uzbekistan

If India U17 loses to Uzbekistan, the last game against Uzbekistan and Australia will merely be a formality to compete for the top spot.

India’s defeat would see them end their Asian campaign without opening their points tally, and a defeat would extinguish India’s Asian and World Cup dreams in the U-17 category.
