The midfielder is now an MLA in the state of Meghalaya.

Former Indian international Eugeneson Lyngdoh has filed his nomination for the post of AIFF Executive Member in the upcoming elections. The 35-year-old has ventured into politics after hanging up his boots and currently serves as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Meghalaya.

The procedure for getting nominated for the elections is that a candidate must be proposed and seconded by State FAs. As such, Lyngdoh's name is being backed by the Meghalaya Football Association. The deadline for filing nomination papers is on Friday.

The news arrives less than three days after FIFA officially confirmed its ban on the AIFF, preventing the national team from participating in any competitive matches. Indian clubs like ATK Mohun Bagan also find themselves in a fix with regard to their continuation in continental tournaments.

About Eugeneson Lyngdoh

Eugeneson Lyngdoh stepped into his father's shoes after he succumbed to coronavirus in 2021. The former Bengaluru FC maestro contested the by-polls from 24 Mawphlang constituency.

Lyngdoh had other plans for his career prior to football. He was pursuing electronics and telecommunications engineering before leaving his studies to focus on football. He joined his local club Rangdajied United and scored 18 goals in 70 appearances for their senior team.

In 2011, Eugeneson was roped in by Shillong Lajong ahead of their I-League campaign. He finished the season as their top scorer with four goals to his name. He would return to Rangdajied for one more season before signing a one-year contract with Bengaluru FC, the then reigning I-League champions.

Eugeneson Lyngdoh would go on to play his best football for the Blues. The midfielder was a crucial player in their 2015/16 I-League winning season and the 2016 AFC Cup, where they became the first Indian club to reach the final. In 2015, he received the prestigious Football Players' Association of India's (FPAI) Player of the Year.

He also racked up caps for the national team, becoming an important cog in Stephen Constantine's system. Since 2015, he has had 24 International caps to his name. It will be intriguing to see the former midfielder in a contrasting role if he goes ahead with his new aspirations in the Indian football circuit.
