All the goals were scored in the second half of the match.

East Bengal picked up a hard-fought 2-1 win over rivals Mohun Bagan in the 2024 Calcutta Football League clash at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Saturday (13 July). After a cagey first half, the game opened up in the second half and the Red & Gold Brigaders took charge.

PV Vishnu opened the scoring with a well-taken finish in the 51st minute, before East Bengal doubled their lead in the 65th minute through a goal from substitute Jesin TK. The Mariners pulled one back deep into added time through Suhail Bhat, but failed to get anything from the Kolkata Derby. Here are the Player Ratings.

East Bengal

Debjit Majumder – 6.0

The veteran goalkeeper had a pretty comfortable game. Had to make only a few easy saves and maintain calm in his box.

Joseph Justin – 4.5

Justin had a good first half but let his temper get the better of him after the break. Made some very silly fouls to earn two yellow cards, leaving East Bengal with 10 men for the final 15 minutes.

Monotosh Chakladar – 7.0

Monotosh was a proactive figure in the East Bengal backline, helping hold together a pretty tight shape. Did well to stop the forwards from getting space in the box and made some vital clearances.

Adil Amal – 5.0

Adil Amal had some issues against Suhail’s physicality and lost mark on the Mohun Bagan a few times. He was taken off at half-time.

Hira Mondal – 7.0

Hira was quite composed and energetic on the left, constantly making runs up and down the pitch. Cut out Mohun Bagan’s threat with smart defending and came close to scoring in the second half.

Naseeb Rahman – 7.5

The East Bengal captain was a really invigorated figure in midfield. He tried leading from the front with his smart pressing, ability to win the ball in key areas and moving it forward with efficient forward passes.

Tanmay Das – 7.0

Tamay held together a strong defensive line with his captain. Added defensive protection to his backline with his intelligent reading of the game and also won a few vital duels.

Aman CK – 7.5

Aman was an electric figure in the wide areas for East Bengal, lighting up the game with his rapid movement and technique. Created quite a few chances with his impressive delivery and set up the second goal with excellent pressing and a smart pass. He needs to polish his finishing skills to break through in the ISL next season.

PV Vishnu – 8.0

Vishnu rose up to the occasion to be the driving force for the East Bengal attack. Got into some great position with his smart movement and linked up to create quite a few chances. Opened the scoring by showing brilliant trickery and scoring a great goal.

Md. Roshal – 6.0

Roshal was quite threatening with his movement, making some darting runs into promising attacking areas. But his final product was a bit awry, which got him substituted.

David Lalhlansanga – 5.0

The East Bengal new-boy had a quiet afternoon in his first Kolkata derby. He couldn’t really get at the end of anything major and looked to be lacking a bit of match sharpness.

Substitutes

Sarthak Golui – 7.5

Sarthak helped add more composure to East Bengal’s backline and supported Chakladar really well. Cut out a lot of Mohun Bagan’s attacks and also set up the opening goal with a smart pass.

Sayan Banerjee – 7.0

Sayan automatically added more attacking drive to the East Bengal frontline after coming on. Triggered a number of promising attacking transitions and tormented the defenders with his movement.

Jesin TK – 7.0

Jesin got in the right place at the right time to score his goal, anticipating Aman’s pass really well. Moved the ball forward nicely and created some nice chances too.

Shyamal Besra – 6.0

Shaymal added more pace to the East Bengal side after coming on and also fulfilled his defensive duties diligently.

VP Suhair – N/R

Suhair couldn’t really get involved in anything promising because of East Bengal being a man down towards the end.

Mohun Bagan

Raja Barman – 6.0

Barman couldn’t really do much about either goal but was brave with his goalkeeping. Made a few great saves by putting his body on the line and ensured the scoreline wasn’t even more damning.

Raj Basfore – 4.0

Basfore had a game to forget as he was constantly harassed by the East Bengal attackers. Switched off too many times, often allowing the forwards to get past him and getting tricked into committing too early. Struggled as a centre-back in the first half and was outwitted by Vishnu before his goal.

Dippendu Biswas – 7.0

The young centre-back neutralized David’s threat in the first half, holding together a strong defensive line with his smart defending. Also moved the ball forward nicely to create a couple of good chances before picking up an injury.

Saurabh Bhanwala – 5.0

Bhanwala had a solid first half, but then a chaotic second half. He made a goalline clearance but then horribly gave the ball away for Jesin’s goal. Won quite a few duels, but was nervous in moving the ball.

Amandeep – 4.5

Amandeep couldn’t really create much from the left, despite trying his best with promising runs. Struggled as a left-back in the second half, being outwitted by Aman.

Lewan Castanha – 5.0

Castanha was troubled by East Bengal’s constant attacks down his side and was caught in bad positions at times. Couldn’t provide any attacking threat either.

Glan Martins – 4.5

Martins couldn’t really give the Mohun Bagan backline the protection it needed and failed to stamp his authority with a lack of pressing. Couldn’t really create much or move the ball fast enough, as he looks to lack match sharpness.

Abhishek Suryavanshi – 4.0

The Mohun Bagan captain failed to be an inspiring figure and was a hollow figure in midfield. Couldn’t really do much in stopping East Bengal’s rapid attacks and struggled with his positioning.

Ravi Rana – 5.0

Rana couldn’t really add any spark to Mohun Bagan’s attack through the right, not being able to get into the final third to create much. Struggled against East Bengal’s attacks

Fardin Ali Molla – 5.5

Fardin worked really hard in his deeper role, often coming deep to help his midfield. He moved around nicely with his surging sprints, but Molla’s final product was awry and failed to really test Debjit.

Suhail Bhat – 7.0

Suhail tried hassling the defenders with his movement. Got the ball in decent positions a few times in the first half, but his shooting was off-point. Produced a clinical finish to pull one back late in added time.

Substitutes

Brijesh Giri – 6.0

Brijesh added more assurance to the left-side of Mohun Bagan’s shape after coming on. But his passing was too simplistic and he failed to really create anything.

Taison Singh – 7.5

Taison added some spark to the Mariners’ forward line, making some exciting runs and testing Debjit with some courageous efforts. Set up Suhail’s goal with an excellent pass.

Salahudheen Adnan – 6.0

Salah had an exciting cameo, as he troubled the East Bengal defenders with his rapid movement and got Justin sent off. But his final product couldn’t be converted by anyone.

Sumit Rathi – 6.0

Rathi added more assurance to the Mohun Bagan backline and held together a decent line. Ensured that his side didn’t concede more than two.

Thumsol Tongsin – N/R

Tongsin had a late cameo and couldn’t really be involved in anything special.
